JHM short shifter is a PITA to install

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
The bolt-in was basically the same as my B5 and went in fine. However, adjusting is hit or miss... lots of miss and no idea why.

At first, I thought I couldn't get into 2nd. Well, turns out that I was actually able to get to R without pushing down! Several adjustments, same thing. Frustrated... not getting it right and that damn circlip taking forever to get it out ....walked away from it.

I gave up and returned to it today, and thought I got it right. Nope, pushing down would only get 1st... no R. WTF?! I took a big swing at adjusting it the other directions seeing how badly I could take it, and bam! Close to perfect. R is now push down only, and can find all gears. I wish 1st was better but I'll let it go for awhile and see if I'm ok with it. At least now I know where R, 1st, and 3rd are in the box so not to go R when thinking I'm in 1st nor money-shifting 2 to 3 and going into 1st.

I wish JHM could figure out the adjustments needed instead of the installer guessing.

Oh, and that ashtray sucks getting back flat again.

Does anyone know where that red light gets clipped back in? I assume it's for the ashtray but I could find a spot to snap it back on. I tucked it up the console for now.

Yes, I saw that and read the 7, 3 degree rule. But, that could be found with the 2 adjustment bolts in an infinite amount of positions and still get those degrees.

A picture of where people are getting the perfect place for each would help.

I've got all gears now and R needs to push down, but this AM now R still needs to push down to get to it however the shifter will pop up and not stay down. So, it's still not quite right.

This is just frustrating when I've installed a UUC and Strat on my B5, B&M in my CTS-V, and all of them functioned just bolted in. Sure, you wanted to better align them, but aligning wasn't required to actually function.

Their directions for one fits all didn't include putting the spacers in. Anyone new to this, their video leaves that out.

I'm not trying to bash JHM, obviously I love their products and continued support of the B6/7 S4. I'm just frustrated and hope to get it dialed in, and help others figure it out. Seems like this thread is a repost, after reading others trying to adjust it.

I didn't see this video though until now.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HOm9gQKFX8M

And that's very close to where I have mine adjusted with the shifter linkage bolt/plate way back and the shifter box almost to the back. I wish I would've seen this before today. That's probably a good starting point that everyone should reference.

Weird. I used that video and mine only required very minor tweaking from the 7 and 3 degree. Maybe I just got lucky? Though, I did do a lot of reading on the adjustments before I installed it so I had a pretty good idea of where I needed to be starting at. I think I also used that picture that nnnick posted.

Yeah, this is looking to be my fault for not reviewing JHM's site entirely to all of the videos and links to pics. I watched the install video only. Now that I saw the tips video, I've got it close.

Also, I understand that it's the push down R that makes it difficult not necessarily JHMs design.

Lesson learned, read and watch it all before installing.

I dont remember how I removed the ash tray, I think I just kind of muscled it out of the way after getting annoyed with everything. It was possible my HVAC and radio wasn't fully inserted before though, I've had both of those out relatively recently when I did it.

All cars will be a little different as far as adjustments go because everyone's components are worn differently. The video helps you get in a ball park and then you can fine tune it from there.

A helpful tip is put it in 1st and wiggle the shifter side to side, and then put it in 5th and wiggle it side to side. The wiggle should be the same amount in both 1st and 5th. If one is tighter than the other you are slightly out of adjustment. You will want to make tiny adjustments because it doesn't take much to be in the sweet spot then be completely off.

I just adjusted one last time and it's perfect.

I backed the plate on the shifter linkage flush, so no gap as pictured above. And about 80% back on the box, so not as far as pictured above.

This really cleaned up going straight up for 1st against pulling left to find it.

    Done.

I remember I was having a tough time getting it dialed in just right. Took about 3 separate times of tweaking it until I found it to be just right. Also forgot to Loctite it the first time and the bolt backed out from vibrations. Learned that lesson the tough way while on the road.

So, now that shifter is 99% there...

Does anyone know how the red LED for the ashtray clips back in?

From what I can remember, there is a slot that the cylinder part pops into under the ash try. The wire is a snug fit since it's being stretched more than it should be with the ash try being out of position, making it a little more difficult than it should be.
