    Not particularly obvious maintenance items

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Is there any preventative maintenance I can do to keep my car performing like new for its lifetime, aside from whats in the Audi maintenance schedule? I'm currently at 42k miles and will be out of warranty soon enough. I like to keep up with the maintenance as best as possible. Are the some less obvious things any one does to their car?

Also does anyone use an excel to keep track of their maintenance records?

Thanks, I've been looking that up. I haven't found a consensus, some people recommend longer intervals for that. Is the timing chain in our cars a pertinent issue to be replaced? Water pump, thermostat, etc..

Trans/diff fluid change every 60k, brake fluid every year, coolant every 2 years.

OEM scheduled maintenance usually tops off those fluids, not replaces it.

Thanks looks like I have some overdue maintenance. Also what would you recommend for replacing coil packs?

I actually meant 30k for the trans/diff fluids! Also, forgot fuel filter....I like to do it every 2 years. For coils, that is a tough one. I am starting to see a lot of folks replacing or upgrading to the R8 coils? I would see coils as needing replacement something around the 75k to 100k miles.

As far as keeping maintenance records goes, I keep a binder with all of my parts and service invoices saved in plastic sleeves ordered by date. To go along with the parts invoices I like to type up a short maintenance summary of what I did, with date and mileage as well. It's good a good reference if you can't remember when you last serviced something and it probably comes in handy when you go to sell your car.

The trans and differential fluids actually need service that often? That's news to me. Great advice from everyone who has replied so far, I really appreciate it

30k is really low for diff fluid. I plan on doing mine at 60 k miles along with my 6MT fluid.

I you want the auto-transmission to last....change the fluid and filter every 30,000 to 40,000 miles.......
Differential gear oil (front and back) and Manual Trans gear oil can be done every 50,000 to 60,000 miles.
Change your power steering fluid every 30,000 to 40,000 miles too.
Replace your coolant (and only used distilled water to mix with the concentrate) every 50,000 miles.

For all the above, make sure you are using the correct fluid...I stick to original VW/Audi stuff to be sure.

    My plan is this -

    Coolant - 50k
    Diffs - 60k
    Oil - 5k
    Power steering fluid - 30k
    Plugs - 30k
    Trans fluid/filter - 30k
    Brake fluid - 2 years

50k for coolant seems pretty reasonable!... Tho mine is close to 4 years ownership but only 27 k miles!...

I'm failing with a search, is there a power steering flush DIY anywhere? Looks like this is the stuff to use?

Here is a procedure from the B6 section. I'd assume it is similar.
    http://www.audizine.com/forum/showth...steering+flush

Looks like you suck all of the old fluid out of the reservoir then add new. From that, you start the car for a couple of seconds to consume the fluid in the tank and push the old out into a catch container. Keep repeating the fill and drain until new fluid starts coming out the drain side.

I would think I could use my power bleeder to make this easier, if there is a cap that fits the power steering lid.
