    head removal help please

need a little help from the S4 experts -

I am in the process of the timing guide replacement on my 06 B7 S4, and seeing that the engine is torn down to this degree, have made the decision to pull the heads for rebuild. Here is the question: what is the exact specifications for the tool to remove the head bolts? I ordered a tool off of amazon that claims to to be the one needed, but does not fit. WTF? I am having trouble finding the correct tool.

Any insight that you all may have is greatly appreciated.

BTW - I debated about removing the heads for quite some time. My S4 skipped a tooth on timing and have an ever most slightly contact with valves on the pistons on one bank. After reading about dropped valves on engines after the valve guide replacements, I got spooked and decided to go the extra step.

I thought I had read something on here about people replacing the valve guides, as you mentioned. But the other day I was looking at ELSAWIN and it says that our valve guides are not replaceable.... is there some method of replacing them that's known to work? I am planning to replace my valve stem seals but am confused about whether or not the guides are also a wear item that is replaceable. any info? (don't mean to hijack, just thought I'd post this here since it's related)

as far as the tool you need, you can probably find an m10 triple square on amazon for much cheaper than the snap-on tool. I bought a set of triple squares from them and they've worked well so far, but they are normal length so I'm not sure if those would work for head bolts. It sounds like you need a long one just based on the other responses in this thread (I have no personal knowledge of that though just to be clear) but I'd be surprised if they didn't carry longer versions as well

My buddy's dad is a Snap dealer but they also have another brand they sell called Bluepoint that might save you a few bucks for a nice set of triple squares.

many thanks for the info folks. I did have a short 10mm four square lying around and was able to weld an extension onto it to get the heads removed.

This was a very rare occasion, but I lucked out to found the bores to all cylinders are in really good shape with no scoring. After a head rebuild I should be good to go.

my 06 was at 110K miles. I picked it up at an auction, thus no history on the car.

it was obvious that it had some timing issues.

You can replace the guides in these heads. i had my heads rebuilt with all new guides installed, the most of the wear i found were on my exhaust valve guides. If you any one needs a set of heads rebuilt with new guides shoot me a PM.

just wondering, is a "dropped valve" typically caused by guide wear?

You are not the only person to replace valve guides. A lot of people of done it. Those heads do look pretty though.

The stock valves are just not very strong. Then tens of thousands of miles and time doesn't help.

I don't believe I insinuated I was the only person to do so, but thanks!

    Cheers.

most all heads are going to be thought of as such.... at the machine shop, they drill out the guide (part of the head actually) then drive in new brass ones... always good to get a good shave as well to make sure the surface isn't warped ;)

had mine rebuilt just like the one above with all new guides and shave for $600 for the pair at a local shop

The stock guides press out, you may be thinking of heads with steel guides. they will drill into the steel guide and press in a bronze insert.

no... these aluminum heads are made with that area harder... it wears out, so they drill that out and insert new guides...
