Here is my video about the 01E manual transmission. I have it for some time, but just find the time to publish it.

If you like it, give me a thumps up, if not, leave comments with how I can improve it. Education should be free...

    Thanks.

WOW! That was super informative. I'm getting ready to do 1-2 collar work and whatever else needs to be done while it's out and was looking for something like this to use as a guide. Thanks again

    Thanks for the motivation.

I was gonna make two parts. One on tear down and the other (this one) on the inner workings. If you want good narration you actually have to write a script. After doing the narration myself I realize it would take a long time to complete so I opt for computer narration. Also my camera was not set to HD while shooting. I had reduce the resolution temporary and forgot to set it back.

I have more video projects to make which no one care to cover so I'll focus on those.

Great video, but I noticed some errors. The speedometer sensor is on the left side and doesn't work the oil pump gear. Here in Europe all S4's have oil pumps. Some A6's don't.

Sweet video. I would recommend changing the title, that video is too cool to have a crappy title, and deserves views/exposure.

Very well done, would have been a nice supplement to the JHM video when I was rebuilding mine. I really commend you for taking the time to put all of that together, and even more for sharing it.

If I had one recommendation, it would be to have someone actually read the information. Robot voices irritate me so much during DIY videos

Good information, thanks for sharing. Not many explanations floating around the web on all-indirect gearboxes and how they operate.

Something that I didn't catch in the video that is probably worth mentioning (please correct me if I mixed this up):

The reverse synchronizer works by applying braking force to the reverse idler gear, which is continuously engaged with the input shaft (note the wide, straight teeth on the input shaft). Braking is required as the input shaft assembly's inertia maintains rotation even after the clutch is disengaged.

This braking action allows the idler to engage with the output shaft via the 1-2 shift collar outer teeth.

The eventual wear on this mechanism I believe to be the culprit with the occasional Reverse-engagement 'grind' that some 01E owners experience (including myself). Also likely that this component is sensitive to lubricant selection & fill level - something to look at if you're having this symptom.

Reverse gear is not continuously engaged. When you move the shifter to select reverse gear it engages both the reverse gear on the mainshaft and the gear teeth on the 1-2 shift sleeve. Also don't apply full power in reverse. Bad things happen.
