Is the "light sensor" in the main cluster modular ?

Meaning, can it be removed and replaced...or is it built right into the cluster?

Mine has been throwing a code since I bought the car, codes bug me.

There is only a sunlight sensor in the middle of the dash panel used for biasing the HVAC. There is no light sensor in the instrument cluster. I have never seen documentation of the existence of a light sensor in the IC, in the B6 A4 model line SSP. What is the exact DTC you are referring to?

There is an ambient light sensor that controls the intensity of the gauge backlights during the daytime. Clicky click®

My IC lighting doesn't work like that. Depending on the adaptation, either no IC lighting, needles only, or all lighting is active with ignition key ON. The backlighting intensity is adjusted with the + or - buttons on the IC.

The backlight intensity is adjusted with the + or – buttons when the headlights are turned on. The display sensor adjusts the intensity automatically when the headlights are off.

Go take a REALLY CLOSE look at your speedometer just below the “0” and to the right of the odometer and you will see a small round dot. Turn your ignition key to on and your headlights off. Shine a light on the dot and see what happens.

It is currently very overcast here with low ambient light. I just went out to my car, turned the ignition on and shined a penlight on the sensor. Gauge backlights went to full intensity. Removed the light and the backlighting turned completely off. Needles remained lit.

Did you code yours to operate differently? My settings are the same as when I purchased the car new. Haven’t changed a thing.

Yeah, I have tried three backlighting options adaptation codes and the results don't exactly match the described options. I don't know why. The three backlighting options are only for Ignition key ON, headlights OFF. I will try and use a flashlight and see what response may occur with the backlighting, since I have never tried that before. Regardless, I have never seen any documentation describing a light sensor in the IC, but there are several items described in the SSP that are different in actual production.

Hummm... so the whole assembly on the top of the dash pops out...I will play around with it in warmer weather.

Kinda confuses me more as I was hoping this was the sensor in the cluster. I say this because my interior lights (back lights for lighter, garage door opener, card holder, cup holder and all back lit lights up by interior light) only work when the + button on the cluster is maxed out. If I hit the - button twice, they all begin to blink. If I take a flashlight to my cluster when they are blinking...they all light back up.
