Timing Belt Broke/Minimal Damage/Looking for Advice

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
In the middle of waiting on parts for another (probably related issue), my timing belt went. So I've got the head off, I saw 3 bent valves. I assume there are a few more, but the good news is there appears to be no real bottom end damage (2 valve marks were on one piston).

So I've got a refurbished head coming in. I placed one order for a laundry list of parts (head gasket parts, head gasket bolts, rear coolant housing/sensor, o rings up the wazoo, spark plugs, and probably some hoses). I've probably got about a week till those parts are here.

First question is, is there anything I really really should think about doing as long as the engine is this far apart? I've got the rear coolant housing covered. I didn't really see any horribly brittle vacuum lines or plastic things (doesn't mean there aren't I shouldn't just do).

Should I replace the camshaft chain/tensioner ($150 total)? Is that a camshaft sensor in the back or is it just the chain tensioner?

And finally, there was a gasket and some sealant on the back of the head. I've got two pictures showing them. No idea what this thing is and what the gasket and sealing material is or if it's from the factory. I assume it's factory but I'd like to find out what this stuff is so I can order it? Anyone know?

Any random advice is also appreciated. Not my first head and it's honestly looking like the easiest one I pulled but I do want to make sure I do things right.

    Thanks in advance.

Seems like you are on the right track.

Not sure about b6's, but b5's have a metal gasket for the SAI valve. My guess is that isn't stock.

My advice- ditch the SAI altogether. It does nothing for you. You will get a cel, but you can take care of that.

The gasket is factory, the sealant however is not. Should be a gasket back there only.

I am putting my engine back together as well and the same gasket is installed on my cyl head but no sealant.

Interesting advice (regarding removing the SAI). I did a bit of reading on that and I'd really like to have my engine bay all cleaned up with the associated hosing removed. It'd make this job and any future work in there much much easier. That SAI (didn't know that's what it was till now) was a bitch to get out even with the head loose. I can't imagine trying it with a head in place.

My question is: If I get an SAI cover plate, and keep the other solenoids in place, I'll have no CEL? I've read the thread and it seems like I see yes and no as the answer. I'm just curious what the solution to the CEL is?

You will have a CEL if you leave the solenoids. The car actually measures the air to see if the SAI is working.

The only way to get it not to be triggered is to have a competent tuner remove the code from triggering the cel

By a competent tuner, you mean more than a VCDS owner?

Just out of curiousity, what should I expect to pay for tuning? I found a local guy who can install United Motorsport software for $400.

I would suggest ReflectTuning (AZ user k0mpresd). He can delete SAI the correct way so that the car will still pass emissions. Instead of the old-school way where they just disable the test, he actually changes the test thresholds so even zero airflow registers as a "pass". He can do other nifty stuff like launch control, no lift shift, immobilizer delete, etc. He is basically 'the man'.

My 3.0 tune from him caused quite a bit of issues with my electrical system. I lost multiple coil packs from it. If I were boosted, I would understand losing the coils. But being N/A, its strange to see coils fail. Swapped the ECU back to stock and new R8 coils and Im back in the game. Also, FWIW, my monitors were deleted on my ECU from him. They were not even accessible.

Weird, i just had this happen to me. My advice is to replace the cam chain tensioner, water pump of course, coolant temp sensor, and any vacuum lines that need it. The vacuum hose to my turbo wasnt tight enough.
