    What exactly holds these things in? Other than the crank, when installed. Do the just gently lay in the grooves until you drop the crank in? Seems a bit odd if that's how it works. But there aren't any tabs or tangs that would otherwise lock them in place.

    You can put a little graphite on the splines or a little grease, but very sparingly, just to kind of lubricate or fill in any imperfections in the shaft.
