In the event of an incident where driver door is opened and swung away and beyond arm's reach (consider the automatic seat belt tensioner as a hinderance in a defense scenario) such as a mugging/car jacking/prowling - a door mounted weapon could be a bad idea for a few reasons.
To the OP:
Here in Washington State, the hand gun must be absolutely concealed and not at all visible from outside the vehicle, which rules out steering colum in these parts. Doesnt seem to be a very time-effective location either. Milliseconds count in handgun defense. I'd vote next to driver seat by thigh bolster.
Is it reasonable to assume that If you're comitted to CC you'll seldom leave your handgun unattended and will have your weapon on your person when you exit your vehicle? If so, you won't need a very sophisticated locking mechanism within your vehicle. Also, if a glock for example doesnt fit your specific CC needs with your vehicle, perhaps get the right tool for the job. For me that might be a very slim single stack 380 or 9mm strictly for vehicle carry. Probaby a Bersa BPCC.
At the end of the day, if you're in a real civilian self defense scenario the last thing that matters is brand loyalty or enthusiast nostalgia. A smaller/different package might offer you more strategic concealment options.
