Looking for clever places for CCW/cary storage...

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I'm looking for some clever ideas where to store your carry firearm, something in the G23/.380 size range. Trying to balance concealability and accessibility. Also looking for secure storage ideas as well.

Currently thinking of mounting a blade holster under the steering column or just to the right of it so that after I enter the vehicle I could holster it there while driving and providing easy emergency access.

I'm also pondering the idea of a solenoid actuated locking mech. paired w a custom sheet metal box that would fit in the center armrest that when actuated outlaw allow access to the firearm but when "locked" and bar or similar would prevent the firearm from being removed.

    Edit...
    founnd these...looking for B8 Specifics.

I was just thinking about this the other day. I think mounting it under the steering wheel would be the best bet because it's easy to grab if you need to do so quickly. Maybe some Velcro under the column and holster the gun into a simple nylon one. I'd think any type of retention other than a snap type button would complicate things..

There are a few bolts under there I may try to use those to mount to the column.

Not sure which bin you are referring to? I would like someplace that has unrestricted access but is also not in plan sight. So I guess I'm as much looking for ideas on where to mount/or holster while still providing accessibility.

The two torx head bolts that are super recessed? I suppose if you can line those up and find one long enough it would be a good mount. I honestly think that's the best place to stash it without having it on your person.

If you get pulled over it'd probably be smart to tell the officer as a courtesy in case they happen see it. I wouldn't say it's common for people to mount them like that and would seem you're trying to conceal because you shouldn't have one in the first place

Agreed will need longer bolts and probably and adapter plate.

Its legal in CO to have a firearm in your vehicle, its considered the same as your home/dwelling. Have a CCW permit as well, not that its needed in the car though.

Depending on what you carry you might have a tough time, my Ruger SR9C just barely fit in there sideways... a smaller glock might be easier

I understand, if it's inside the car it's in your control. Nothing wrong with it and you don't have to disclose that you are carrying, but it would be smart and safe just to let them know. You put your hand on your knee or thigh for no apparent reason and that draws their attention towards the grip..wouldn't be a fun experience.

Agreed it smart to acknowledge it in some manner. Its good practice to hand them your CCW permit w your license when/if pulled over, if they care to know more they will ask. Its not always well received to open with "hey I have a gun" to a cop that may be on edge to begin with.

I dont have those...I know ECS carries them, but I wasn't sure if my glock would fit there, also thinking I may want something more accessible. But thanks for mentioning, it may be an option.

Just found this comparison pic....might be a good option... for both my 26 or 42.

if you're a lefty there might be just enough room in the door storage spot? Side of the center console and angle the holster slightly towards you so you can get your hand around it? Not sure if it would interfere with your leg though

In the event of an incident where driver door is opened and swung away and beyond arm's reach (consider the automatic seat belt tensioner as a hinderance in a defense scenario) such as a mugging/car jacking/prowling - a door mounted weapon could be a bad idea for a few reasons.

    To the OP:

Here in Washington State, the hand gun must be absolutely concealed and not at all visible from outside the vehicle, which rules out steering colum in these parts. Doesnt seem to be a very time-effective location either. Milliseconds count in handgun defense. I'd vote next to driver seat by thigh bolster.

Is it reasonable to assume that If you're comitted to CC you'll seldom leave your handgun unattended and will have your weapon on your person when you exit your vehicle? If so, you won't need a very sophisticated locking mechanism within your vehicle. Also, if a glock for example doesnt fit your specific CC needs with your vehicle, perhaps get the right tool for the job. For me that might be a very slim single stack 380 or 9mm strictly for vehicle carry. Probaby a Bersa BPCC.

At the end of the day, if you're in a real civilian self defense scenario the last thing that matters is brand loyalty or enthusiast nostalgia. A smaller/different package might offer you more strategic concealment options.

Curious to see what sort of solution the OP discovers! Subscribed...

Get a gun rack like in Alabama and you can install it in the rear glass like if you were going hunting.

The best place for your sidearm is on your person in a quality holster with good retention features. I expose my sidearm when in my vehicles and wrap the shoulder belt between the grip and my body so that my gun is easily available to my hand should I need to get to it. The problem with steering wheel holsters, glove boxes, consoles, and similar places is that if you are suddenly attacked by a carjacker and yanked out of your vehicle, you mostly likely just gave them a loaded gun with your car. If it is on your person, they are not expecting that and you could retaliate with necessary force to the threat.

It really is best if it remains on your person. Also, there is less danger of an AD due to moving it from one place to another if it lives in your holster. I know of an incident not too far from where I live where a man was moving his Glock 23 from his glovebox to his holster (shopping center was a Free Fire Zone). A section of his shirt got caught in the trigger guard as he pushed his G23 home into its holster and the gun discharged. The bullet entered the man's right thigh and severed his femur artery. He did manage to call 911 but exsanguinated right in front of his children.
In the final seconds of your life, just before your killer is about to dispatch you to that great eternal darkness, what would you rather have in your hand? A cell phone or a gun?

Wouldn't doubt it if this happened but the OP's question is perfectly valid and important. He did not open a discussion on the pros and cons of carrying a firearm but rather how best to do so in his vehicle. Perfectly fine as I see it.

yes but you know the anti-gun people always come in every gun thread and tell us why we shouldn't carry or own guns.. as indicated by the "don't go to the ghetto" comment

Neosapian & SoutherBoy ann a few others bring up some great points. I already considered that the side bin and center console are not acceptable for a car jacking scenario and was only looking at the center console for a temp. secure storage location when necessary. Also good points made regarding the column mount, in some further research I also found some concerns related to gross motor skills in and the tendency to smack your hand on the steering wheel when retrieving the firearm in an emergency situation.

I purchased the G42 .380 (not a fan boy either) specifically as a light weight carry option with the car in mind and I'd rather not unholster/holster when entering/exiting the vehicle however seating is less comfortable than I hopped due to the bigger side bolsters.

I did see one of those threads which had a good generic storage option, I was hopping for suggestion or examples specific to the B8.

Thanks for the suggestions I will keep looking/experimenting with options and update if I find a good alternative.

Thanks for the suggestions I will keep looking/experimenting with options and update if I find a good alternative.
I am always armed when out and about. Most of the time my sidearm is either a gen3 Glock 19 or gen3 Glock 23, but there are a few M&P's in the mix. I have no problem carrying my holstered G19/23 in my 2016 S4. It works just fine.

One gun you might consider for a little deeper concealment and perhaps a little more friendly for car carry is the M&P Shield series in a DeSantis Mini Scabbard belt holster. This setup is one of my primary carry rigs.
In the final seconds of your life, just before your killer is about to dispatch you to that great eternal darkness, what would you rather have in your hand? A cell phone or a gun?

Neodapian you're right. My doors automatically lock but you never know..good call. I carry the S&W shield usually because of its size but I still think it'd be difficult to be able to unholster it while sitting. I also don't want it to create wear marks on my seat because the grips will do that.

Belt. I'm a bit skittish about appendix carrying a Glock and don't care for IWB holsters. Belt works fine with me.

I carry one of my M&P 9 Shields from time to time and they work just fine in my DeSantis Mini Scabbard belt holster. Gun doesn't touch anything in the car. Same with a Glock 19 or 23. Like you I don't want any marks on my seats or console hardware so I am quite careful.

Much better for you to exit the car with it on ur person and if able to unholster than to be reaching while someone has a gun pointed at you or your car gets stolen with the firearm inside

If you actually needed it from inside your car 1. You'd have to have a really good reason to call that a justified use of self defense... Being that you're in a car and should be able to flee the danger. Also that would be pretty difficult place to retrieve a firearm in the moment. I have a Glock 23 and bought the cheap like 7$ Glock holster with the belt loops on it, when to Walmart and bought a small black ratchet strap and wrapped it around the steering column so the firearm is directly below the steering wheel.

How do you carry (where 3 o'clock etc)? I carry a Springfield XDS, but my preferred spot of 4-5 o'clock comes in direct contact with the seatback bolstering and, while the gun is covered, it does leave indentations in the seat. Also, makes it really hard to draw.

I cant carry more forward than that or its just too uncomfortable in the car. I also cant carry any of my bigger guns or they really interfere with the seat.

I am a bigger guy though, maybe a little skinny dude can get away with it better.
