    Cost for painting bumpers?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So I've got an appointment to have a dent on my trunk fixed after an accident at my house.

While the body shop has it, I asked them about re-painting my front and rear bumpers. My front bumper has 71k mies worth of rock chips. They quoted me $1400 to re-paint my front bumper, said it's labor intensive and they have to strip it all the way down, etc.

$1400 seems really high to re-paint the front bumper.

This is an Audi-certified body shop that my dealer recommends; I went yesterday and they only do high-end cars.

Question: what is reasonable to pay a quality shop for a re-spray of the front bumper? I just couldn't bite the bullet and say yes to $1400 for the front alone. I feel like I can get both front and rear done for around $1000.

depends on the shop, but that is not really that far out especially if they are stripping it first. find a maaco and get them to just spray it and it'll be like 300 a piece, but won't look quite right. Gotta either strip it or fill the chips to make it level, then paint. it's expensive.

Obviously I would never go to MAACO, but that does seem really high. I'm going to get another quote today. I remember paying $400 for a re-spray of my front bumper on my M3 a few years ago.

What are some good questions to ask a shop?

You could 100% get both done for $1,000. No more than say $650 for the front alone. This should be "customer pay" which is less than insurance pay. I am in Wilkes, and have a great shop. I know they would do both for $1K.

If you like, give them a call at 336-667-1804 and ask for Joey (owner) and say Ben Pagett sent you. Would be a ~1.25 hour drive, but for a nice job and the savings it would be worth it.

I am not going through insurance on this. My home builder accidentally had a door slam against my car when he was installing a new one, so they are paying for it. I am going to see a shop here in Charlotte I used before that is more reasonable, I just wanted reassurance that the original quote from the "luxury" collision place was quite high.

I assume by your sig your ibis white. You can assume 4-6 hours written shop time to spray and prep a front bumper. Paint Costs are roughly 75-250. The large disparity comes from you buying vs paying them to sell it to you. If the shop rate is 150 an hour, which incredibly isn't that uncommon now, I can see approaching this quote. However, push for a flat rate that will get you a better deal, and tell them you have the paint already. You should be in the 5-700 range for a quality job. Closer to 5.

I'm getting my front bumper, hood, and trunk all resprayed at a quality shop in the Boston area.

    Cost is $1200.

I would say $1400 for just the front bumper is ridiculous unless you have a very very difficult color to reproduce?

Edit: just saw Ibis White -- no way its worth $1400.

1400 is insane... dont do it. I got a bumper repainted on my old car at the shop that the Ferrari/Maserati dealer uses and it was like 450 for the rear. Funny story cause when my car was there it was sandwiched between 2 wrecked 458's :P

Man, 1400 does sound insane. I have some chips from Highway driving on the hood and bumper, a juicy one on the A pillar when I bought the car and one scratch on the bumper from parking in NYC. I'm thinking of getting it all done when the bumper/hood chips get semi-bad and then XPEL /whatever wrap. I'm already fretting over the price, but I'm glad some others have chimed in to post more reasonable quotes. Hopefully Estoril Blue Crystal is not a hard color to mix.

I agree that it shouldn't be more than 600-700. My dad has the bumper on his 911 repainted for 650. Hell, you can get a brand new bumper primed for $1200

I'm sure that you can find a quality shop in your area that will do the job for a lot less. I think you need to shop around for BOTH jobs. Just because someone charges more for your paint job, doesn't actually make it better. In this case ,you aren't really get what you are paying for. The high end shop would be expected to do a high end repair. But other shops can do the same for less. This job is not rocket science and requires no special expertise.

Decided to use a shop I've used in past and he's doing the trunk dent repair/re-paint for $460 and re-painting front bumper (sanding it down to smooth it out, re-painting) for $495. Even doing my rear bumper for free since he did it several years ago and had a small issue with it (spiderweb mark). So I'm getting three things for under $1000 ... whereas the original place was going to be charging me $2200+ for the front bumper and trunk, not including rear bumper.

I was quoted $500 for my hood, where I have chips, too, but I am holding off on that for now.

Ive had my Audi A5 rear bumber repainted twice for "various" reasons. It was roughly $800 each time. If you have actual dents that need repair etc it would be more.

was rear ended and my bumper needed a respray as well. About 900 bucks...in Canada where everything seems to be 25% more expensive.

The whole "luxury" or sports car specialty shops just use that name to have an excuse to charge twice as much.

Its funny because when a shop knows insurance is being used they typically do everything they can to earn more money for the shop. When its out of pocket, its been my experience that prices are much much more reasonable to earn your business. Run for the hills, couldn't image paying more than 600 bucks even in Canada.

I'd be reluctant to repaint my bumper unless it was really bad. On trade in, the repaint will signal "accident". Body guys can detect this pretty quick. Plus, whenever my bumpers have been redone, they never had the elasticity of the original paint. The new paint typically got cracks and spiderwebbing after being flexed.

If it's just rock chips, I bring them my little pen-bottle of Phantom Black chip fixer paint and ask them to go for it. They'll wetsand it and use the chip pen with expert hands. It never comes out 100% perfect, but twice for me when it has come time to pay they've just said "it's on us".

If you're willing to drive to Boston, Automotive Specialties Inc. in Brookline is likely the best Eurocar body shop I have dealt with. Cleanest shop I have ever seen; and excellent service people. Plus the aforementioned free services for rock chips.

Disclosure: I have no affiliation with them, other than they've given great service, sometimes free of charge.
