2.8s aren't tunable but are arguably more reliable. That's a pretty good deal I'd say, but I'm a bit suspicious of the price and the supposed easy work to be done.

1.8t is way to go if not s4 and make sure ur used engine isn't leaking or leaking terribly. And try to find one adult driven as opposed to an "project car" which the vehicle is being beat on thru the years

    There's no such thing as a s-line B5.

There is no argument. The 2.8 is hands down more reliable if the same maintenance schedule has been followed on both motors

There most certainly is an argument. Routine maintenance the same on both, 2.8s have two more cylinders and an additional bank to take care of. More shit to go wrong, essentially.

If your steering wheel has S4, S, or SPORT on the badge, it's not stock. Stock is a fat red stripe on the left with chrome audi rings in it, and two thinner chrome stripes on the right.

The steering badge looks similiar but without the extra stripe it has two instead of three.

Timing belt & water pump is the biggest concern. IMO.

    All Over!

    There was no S-Line B5.

The S-Line was first introduced in the B6, from circa late 2003. Prior to the S-Line era, there were only Base, SE and Sport. S-Line applied to the B6 1.8T and 1.9TDI 130. 2.4 / 3.0 V6 models remained either SE and Sport, so did the 2.5 TDI V6.

The decal on the steering wheel is nothing to do with the S-Line models exclusively, it was used on all Sport models with the 3-spoke Sport steering wheel. The same steering wheel Sport decal was also used on the B4 Audi 80 2.6 / 2.8 Quattro Sport. They were definitely not S-Line models.

Audi / Volkswagen have used red bars and and red portions of the badges for years, not to denote Sport models as such, but more as an indication of engine output, and state of tune.

For parts and labor 855 would be some what cheap I feel like. But everything cost more in MD lol Maybe 850 in TN. With shop mark up parts will be $300 give or take US and then most shops call that an 8 hour job @ $80 -$100 an hour puts you over $850

Also look at the Tbelt cover if it was done before by a good shop or dealer it may have a Tbelt sticker with miles and date of last change.

328 or b5 would be cheaper to own. if your planning to mod it go 1.8t qm
if the b5 would be a 2.8 then the e36 would get priority

Good to share ideas, that's how we all learn.

I worked as a Tech at an Audi dealership for 15 years, and 7 for Volkswagen. I will obviously speak for European models.

All base and SE models of the B5 had a 4-spoke steering wheel, with early models being carried over from the B4 Audi 80. Sport models were fitted with the 3-spoke steering wheel, the Sport decal was standard on all Sport B5's with the 3-spoke Sport steering wheel, and later B4 Sport models which were also fitted with the same 3-spoke Sport steering wheel. Early B4 Sport models had the same 3-spoke Sport steering wheel.

The same trend applied the the C5 and D2 range.

I remember how many requests came through my dealership for retrofit of the Sport steering wheel. We were allowed to sell them, BUT not allowed to retrofit.

The B5 brochures at the time were for Base, SE and Sport, and showed what accessories were options on the different models, as well as those that were exclusive to a particular model. The 3-spoke steering wheel was referred to as Sport. These steering wheels were not available without the Sport decal, and were part of the Sport package, which included Sport front seats, Sport alloy wheels, Sport suspension, higher-geared steering rack and thicker front ARB.

As I stated previously, this applied to European models, North American cars MAY well be different.

NA cars could have the 3 spoke wheel as an option. Not a ton of cars with non-sport suspension and the 3 spoke wheel, but they are out there.

By the time we got around to 2001, pretty much everything came with sport package.
