No Engine Cover -> Ruined Hood?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So I went to the dealership to ask about what I thought was a leak but turned out to not be an issue. The mechanic asked why I didn't have the engine cover on and I explained that the plastic kinda looks shitty to me, but he explained that its actually a heat sync. He said that he's seen people leave it off and actually end up having their hoods warp or have paint issues. Has anyone here seen or had that issue?

Imo, if you are experiencing enough heat under your hood to make the paint blister, you have bigger problems, and that plastic cover is not going to dissipate the heat fast enough. Does the cover channel air flow in any way?

Hood warping....c'mon now. I've seen some crazy BAT setups that have tens of thousands of miles racked up and no warping. Like someone mentioned above, if your hood warps from such heat, you've got bigger issues than a warped hood.

The engine cover is there mostly for aesthetics and sound insulation.

Request a different tech to work on your car. That comment alone is cause for alarm as he has no bloody clue what he talking about.

Noob tech. If the temperatures got hot enough to warp the hood, then it'd be hot enough to melt the plastic.

if this is the type of common sense we have working at dealers then I'm never having my car serviced there. don't these techs go to audi school or something?

Loooooooool. The plastic would melt before a hood would warp.

    Common sense here.

Don't dismiss the mechanics comments out of hand.

The lack of engine cover wont necessarily warp your hood, but it can cause the paint to blister/discolour giving you the paint issues the OP referred to.

On the S/RS/6/7 models, the engine cover has a significant heatsink built into its underside. Given the heat output of the engine, and the high mounting position of the twin turbos I have no doubt that if running stationary (or just stopped from a long run) the heat soak from the turbo and connecting pipes would be well capable of causing paint damage if left uncovered.

Agreed, but the engine cover as a plastic "heat sink"...

But we are talking about an A4 with just an aesthetic PLASTIC engine cover. Plus the engine cover doesnt cover really any part of the exhaust that would really get hot. It basically just sits on top of the valve cover and intake.

The plastic intake, that is. And it sits over the plastic topped coils.

The only reason I want my cover back on is because the engine is ugly and I hate looking at it. Other than that the cover doesn't do too much.

Yep. Techs are trained to be mechanics...to perform service and repairs to Audi vehicles. They aren't supposed to be automotive engineers that truly understand how everything works mechanically.
