    Hard to shift

    Have a 2010 S5.

Started having difficulty shifting over the last couple of days especially into 1-2 and R. I don't feel any grinding it just seems like it's super difficult to push into gear, sometimes in second gear if I'm not careful to really jam it in it will just pop back out of gear.

What's stranger, and not something I can find anyone else reporting, is that it shifts like butter from a cold start up through like 20-25 minutes of driving. I go into the office around 5am and only takes me about 20min, but drive home I hit rush hour (bumper to bumper, start and go etc). lots of shifting. By the time I get to the 30 min mark I start having trouble shifting. If I shut off the engine and give it 5 minutes, there's a noticeable improvement.

    Anyone have any thoughts?

Honestly, I could be several things so it is really hard to say without some testing to rule out things like the master and slave cylinders.

The fact that it gets progressively worse while driving kind of sounds like air might be getting into the system. A friend of mine had a similar issue and after inspecting the lines we discovered a small leak that was letting air in.

I'm sure that one of the gurus here may have some better advice though.

    eliminations:
    > Not clutch dragging or R would grind
    > Not syncromesh cones worn because R does not have them

    guess:
    >linkage mechanism is a bit out of whack. You haven't a short-shifter on there?

    question:
    >are any other selections affected? like N - 1

Seems like a short-shifter but I'm not sure. Also might be worth mentioning that everything shifts fine with the engine off (not sure if that's meaningful).
Yes, all selections are effected but especially N-1, N-R, 1-2. Everything is effected but, N-1, 1-2 and N-R are the worst.

I'd run with the mechanism adjustment for now, worth checking before it gets worse if that's what it is.
