    Dad issues - baby seat

Hey team. If you don't have a kid move along to the intake thread.

So my kid is growing out of his baby seat and I'm looking at convertible/forward facing seats for the RS. He's 9 months and will probably need a new seat in the next 4-6 months. Normally he rides around in the wife's X5, but once in a while he likes to go for man-trips with his Dad in the RS5. Obviously.

We use the Peg Perego baby seat right now - they seem to be one of the safest and also look kickass with the black leather-type trim. It looks like the Peg convertible seat would fit but likely only forward facing - which apparently makes you child at a 1000x greater risk of starting on fire/exploding in a car accident. The kid is 2 pounds shy of technically being able to sit facing forward but some European countries recommend staying rearward until age 4. In Canada 1 year is acceptable but not ideal, and age 2 is preferred. Worst case I could just let the wife take the RS when I have the kid and I drive the X5 when needed until he is age 2-4....but he loves the car already. Honestly it's only just me and him once in a while.

What are the Dad's using for their 1.5-4 year olds in car seats in their A/S/RS5? Are you ok with the kid front facing between age 1 and 2?

Sorry for a boring post. I'll get back to the Eventuri thread asap.

Front facing all depends on the size of the kid. It is highly recommended to have the child in a rear facing seat for as long as they fit.

After that, I had mine in a Recaro front facing. I think the Recaro can be used as a rear facing too. Here's a good comparison:
    http://us.recaro-cs.com/car-seats.html

Also, I had the car seat behind the drivers seat so that my wife could sit next to her from time to time. I sit quite straight with very little lean in the seats, and there was barely any room. (i'm not too tall).

I had these in my RS for ~3 years. Both my kids also liked to ride in Daddy's car, but the rule was for short distances. We left our SUV's for longer haul (>30min) wet conditions and or on highways.

My younger one was in the RS from 1-2 years old in that smaller seat (left one) always forward facing. Forward faced for both since 20lbs/~1 year. We moved them both out of the smaller seat simply due to length. Weight for the smaller seat shown was up to 65lbs, but your kido will be way too tall for the seat at 65lbs. LOL! Obviously the longer you can keep them rear facing the better, but for ours they grew like weeds and it became tough to rear face them due to leg space.

I would look at Britax as we have used them in both our cars for going on six years now with no probs. Also Peg Perego is good as you already know. There is a store in Houston who carries higher end car seats and they would let you take any out to test them in your car. Safety is the main concern, but when your talking a coupe, the car seats these days can get huge!

Thanks for the responses guys. We are of the same mind as far as the RS is for in town short trips with me and the kid, while any family trips are with the SUV - both for size and safety.

For longer trips, I prefer to take the RS rather than the civic. more fun, and definitely safer :o

It's really funny stuffing my 'baby' in the back of my S5. He's now 6'2" (taller than me) and has to sit sideways if anyone in the front seat has legs.

Or maybe Audi can one day bring the RS6 to the USA! Even though i know it will be SUPER expensive, i am guessing RS7 price almost.

HA! That is so awesome, there's more room in that back seat than i originally thought before i got my S5. Surface area at least not leg room. But my kid who's 11 & getting tall i thought it might be a problem after a bit of a problem, i had a Hummer H3 prior as a DD. But i felt the SUV thing was tedious as we don't travel far, not to mention the wifey works from home. But he fits back there pretty good. He loves driving in the S5 with me, sometimes we even stuff mom in the back . But that double car seat is a win!

The S5 works fine for now, and don't miss the 4 door yet as he's usually in the car with me alone, or in the car with her etc. If i miss a 4 door in the future ill probably get a second SQ5, those are pretty spiffy. Even though im over the SUV thing for now.

    Dad issues

I couldn't handle the thought of putting car seats in my coupe so I bought a used b8 avant as a third vehicle to go with the suv. Problem solved.

Getting the seats in the coupe is one thing but contorting your body (and theirs) to get the kid in the seat is painful. It's bad enough in the avant and it has 4 doors!

I could handle having kids in the back of the coupe a few times a year but not daily.

I might be wrong here, but I thought the key issue for keeping babies in a rear facing seat is not so much the fact that it is rear facing, rather that front-facing ones have a 3-point harness and there is a risk that babies can be harmed by them (during an emergency stop). When mine were at that age I got a front-facing Recaro seat from Audi which didn't have a 3-point harness but a massive bolster instead. Unfortunately I don't think it is made any more but I found a photo of one like it.

The new convertible seats are both front and rear facing with five point harnesses. Facing rear is still far safer at any age under four apparently. Unfortunately anything bigger than an infant seat won't face rearward in the coupes (and apparently many other normal size cars). That seat looks terrifyingly toy like - I think all child seats are 5 point harnesses now. Cute kid though, looks like she loves it.

Actually it was a good seat and so easy to get kids in and out of.

I guess my experience is now very out of date (15 years ago) - everything was 3-point in those days. Aside from the problem of fitting a rear-facing set in the car, I'd have thought that another major problem is that once kids are old enough to be 'alert' in the car, they simply don't want to be facing backwards! I wonder how many 4 year olds in a rear-facing seat spend most of the journey trying to lean to the side and see to the front?

My kid isn't even 1 and he's bored af looking at a seat back. I agree it's pretty unrealistic - I think that's why most recommendations end with "if possible". We know who has the final say.

I am a kids ortho doc( bones ) and the rationale for the rear facing seats is that front facing seats don't provide any support to the head in sudden deceleration injuries and kids up to about 4 or so are more prone to injury to their cervical spine due to anatomical differences at a young age. so it does make good sense to keep them rear facing for as long as possible, recognizing that there can be some practical issues

No four legged kids allowed in my RS. I even have a hard time with the two legged one. Usually results in 10-15 of post kid clean up.

The RS5/S5/A5 has TONS of room backseat in comparison to say what i seen kids/baby seats in "sports cars" before. Well relatively speaking.

Back YEARS ago when i was 18 working at Audi/Porsche/VW as a lot attendant i would see cars in service with their Porsche 911's and Carrera's etc with Sparco baby/kids seats in the backseat, if you even call it that. That was the first time i seen the SPARCO type baby seats, always thought that was cool. I'm sure most of those guys could afford and possibly did own a Larger vehicle for longer hauls. But its gotta be pretty bad ass to realize once you have grown up that your Dad touted you around in his Porsche with essentially no backseat lol.

Although the recommended age is 2 years old for front facing, both of my kids grew out of rear facing seats around 20 months. Right now I have two front facing seats in my A5 - Graco convertible and a Graco 3 in 1 which transforms into a booster seat.

You really don't want to be at the minimum height/weight limit just to make the change, as their bodies should be most developed before turning them around. Biggest concern is head/neck support in a crash. My daughter went forward facing around 25 lbs, and my son was around 22lbs, but he was taller.

When I first test drove the car, I was surprised how much room there is in the back. My car is a manual, so with me sitting closer to the wheel than usual and at 5'9'', the seat isn't far back at all. However, my son sits behind me, and he can still kick my seatback, which is very annoying.

I bought the A5 used as a stop-gap until I can find a good lease deal on a sedan I really want, not thinking I take my kids very often. Boy was I wrong, I take my kids more places than I thought. Bending and contorting my body just to buckle them in the back is such a huge pain in the @ss. Every parent knows the struggle of convincing a two year old to sit still for 5 seconds so you can buckle them in. Always a challenge.

    Good luck!
