    5 speed transmission compatibility

    Hello,

I have a 2001 a4 1.8t and my 5 speed 3 third gear syncros are gone as it grinds when I try to go in and I'm planning to replace it. I have found a 5 speed out of a a4 1.8t also but not sure which year is it from.

I also know that the a4 prior to 1999.5 I think requires you to push down to get into reverse and on the mine 2001, it does not. Is this a shift linkage difference between the years? Are all 1.8t 5 speed are 01A trans? Would any year a4 1.8t 5 speed will work on my 2001?

    Thanks

All b5 a4 trans are swapable, to a certain degree.

Can't remember if the flanges from 00 and less are the same as 01. Someone else chime in now.....

I found a guy that's selling a 5 speed 01A that was in his 1999.5 A4 1.8t with flywheel and used clutch for $275 which is a good deal and I just want to make sure that it will work on my 2001 A4 1.8t.

While its out replace your clutch. Just don't do a stock one. Get something a little more uprated. The stock clutch could barely hold stock power. So don't worry about the stock flywheel. You want to get something with a solid flywheel.

While it will bolt on, the V6 version of the 01A has different gear ratios.

Axle flanges are different on the early cars, 108 vs 100mm.

That said, they pop off and the replacement clips are $2.

Apart from that they are virtually identical externally. Gear ratio's between the years/models are different with FWD and v6 tranis getting different gearing.

If you have to swap the stub axles, grab new stub axle seals as well. Also always put a new Throwout bearing and if you have time a pilot bearing in. Clutch should be inspected for wear and replaced if needed.

Stock clutch is fine for stock HP, it last 125k miles on average which is plenty for most.

My 99.5 is still on the stock clutch and flywheel. I run a gt3071r turbo at 19 psi and it's still going strong. It has 142xxx miles on it. The car had a k04-015 installed at 65xxx miles so it's seen way more then factory levels. I am not suggesting you run one the way I have but mine has impressed me.

I like those ecstatic s4 and rs4 kits.

    - The 108mm vs 100mm is for FWD vs quattro. All of the quattro 5-speed inners are 100mm for all years of the B5, for all engines, and indeed all the way back to 1988. For North America, anyway.

    - I would agree with replacing the seals. These boxes are all getting old. Do all the seals while it's out. Especially the left and right output shaft seals. Probably the shifter shaft seal, too. That's a bugger to do in the car.

I believe the 99.5 is a facelift so is my 2001. So this should be a plug-n-play maybe I have to swap out the axle flange and replace all the seals?

What seals should I replace on my trans, it's out of the car already and it's getting a fluid flush anyways.

    - At a minimum, the left and right output shaft seals.
    - One that can only be changed with the trans (or engine) out of the car is the input shaft seal. It's kind rare to fail, but I've seen one leak at 140k. And it leaks onto the clutch. Due to the difficulty of doing this one later, it should probably be on your list.
    - Shifter shaft seal. These do have trouble (usually a slow leak), but are sometimes quite a fight to change in the car due to small diameter and tight access. I would do it now.
    - The rear output shaft seal is not as common to leak, but if you're doing all the others, might as well.

I am pretty sure it's stock. I did buy the car used but the previous owner bought the car stock and told me he never swapped out the clutch which was his plans before selling it. I think it has held up since it spools later in the rpm range then smaller turbos. When a car is moving you are not putting as much load on the setup as when it is stationary and you Rev dump. My boost onset is 3500 rpm.

Yes. You sort of push them out using long bolts that go through the bolt holes and bottom out against the transmission case. Generally 2 bolts opposite each other, and wind the bolts to pull the flange out.

Tap them in straight with a hammer. They pop in with some force. I use a long punch, dead center in the cup.
