Leased vehicle with an ECU tune...

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
There has always been a lot of talk about denial of warranty with a tuned vehicle. What about the situation where you don't need any warranty repairs, but for a leased vehicle, what can happen when it's time to return the vehicle to Audi at the end of lease if you elect not to buy-out?

I don't think i've heard anything about what effect tuning might have on the return of the vehicle after your lease is up.

That's a good question. Typically any mods to a lease car are supposed to be removed prior to drop off. They will inspect the car's outside and interior condition. I wonder if they then diagnose the status of the ECU?

To play the devil's advocate. How would another buyer like to purchase your leased car not knowing it had a tune? Does the dealership legally have to tell the customer that the car was flagged TD1?

I'd be really careful with this. I've heard stories where dealers ended up trying to charge people thousands upon lease turn in due to TD1 because AoA can no longer certify the car and resell as CPO... thus they lose a couple grand in resale value. I also know people that got away with it just fine. Pay to play. It's a risk

Isn't this the same really as flashing back to stock?

Some people say they have no issue and others say different. I would say before the lease is up have the tuner flash it back to stock not stock mode and be done with it

Don't think returning a leased or purchased car is any different of a situation. The dealership still usually wants to CPO it (unless it's an RS7) and won't be able to if it gets flagged.

I traded my car back in with no issues.
My salesman knew my car was tuned and just made sure I had it unflashed... he was still kind of nervous about it.
He told me a story about a customer forgetting to unflash his S8, which had a tune and it cost the dealership $12k (for what, I'm not sure) to clear the TD1 and be able to certify the car. He said it was on the dealership since the deal was already done and they couldn't/wouldn't go back to the owner of the vehicle.

My A6 had a funky flag. It was flashed to stock before getting traded in. And it was CPO'd when sold to the next customer (AoA was involved in my matter for the most part). I do know for a fact that in case of flags, the dealership has to flash the ecu to stock after approval from AoA and the TD1 is removed. Not a 12k process though. Dealers do like to inflate numbers like always.

This right here is what makes TD1 hypocritical. Audi is happy to deny your warranty over it, but once it comes time for them to make some money, they're happy to erase that it ever happened…

There are 2 sides though. I just read a guy's post saying that a few dealerships just play the scare tactic- suspicious car? tell the customer that they got flagged and try to have them pay. Could have been the case with me because I dont see any other way that the flag was removed or it just disappeared. But yes, a simple flash to stock at the dealership and they can remove the td1 - http://www.vwroc.com/forums/topic/83...-this-morning/

Post#230 is a letter sent to the owner by AoA. They do acknowledge the fact that if the car is returned to stock specs, the warranty is back in full effect.

Its actually specified in their technical release that td1 is removed if the car is returned to stock. The thing is they still wont cover the issue that occured prior to going stock. They will cover what happens after.

Say if the ecu counter can't change back to stock "0", and it show 1 however you are flask back to stock, how do they know when you switched back to stock?
Do the ECU keep the track of the date that it was flashed?
