Exclamation So.. Yet another loud-engined 2.0TFSI

    Hi Guys!!

    Steve here from sunny SA.

So, about 10 months ago, I had a cam chain tensioner failure on my car, which we fixed (we = techie at Merc and me), and there was luckily no damage on the valvetrain. Chain snapped at low RPM, and no valves was hit/bent. We stripped out the oil pan and oil pickup tube, and found that it had been clogged-contributing to the tensioner failure and low oil pressure.

All fixed up, and the car sounded much better, better fuel consumption and no more loud startups in the mornings.
Drove around for 6 months without any issues, and then all hell broke loose. The timing belt (which has been replaced about a year before the chain+tensioner failure), had stripped its teeth off at the crankshaft gear, resulting in 14 of the 16 valves bent.

Off came the head, and into the engineering shop it went. Told them that I replaced the cam chain and tensioner a few months back, and they should replace those too - as it might have stretched/been damaged. Received it back a week or so afterwards, with the invoice and "assurance" that all was in order - x16 valves fitted and seated, guides checked, carbon clean done, cams was timed and cam chain + tensioner was in good condition, and not replaced. They also replaced x1 lash adjuster and roller rocker arm.

Assembled and started it up. Ran like clockwork, had it scanned and no fault codes came up. Drove around all happy, and then I noticed the engine became much louder than before. I suspect the cam chain and tensioner is starting to fail again, as it has not been replaced by the bastards at engineering. The sound is louder at startup, and quiets down, but is still very noticeable inside the car, and outside it sounds very very loud. Too scared to drive the car now again.

So, I suspect the cam chain+tensioner had stretched and is on it's way out, and also, the other lash adjusters and roller rocker arms from the other valves that might have got damaged.

What's your take on this? Check the vids, it's loud as hell.

Have you ever checked oil pressure? Sounds like you've been starving the head for oil and just chasing the failures and not the root issue of your problem. I would start there...

I would check oil pressure for sure and if it's low I would get the oil pump checked out/replaced.
