    PCV Delete .. Any Drawbacks?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Just as the title states, when I bought my Audi I had a bunch of carbon build up (misfires, rough idle) and so I cleaned it out about 3k miles ago. When I did the carbon cleaning, I had a local guy tell me he had a PCV delete installed (that vents to the atmosphere) and he said he's never had any issues with carbon deposits on any of his Audi's (has 3 of them) so I did a little research and even searched on here and have seen a few members on here who have added a catch can + pcv delete setup and have had good things to say about no more carbon build up and stuff, but none who have really JUST installed the pcv delete and vented it to the atmosphere, is there any drawbacks to venting it to the atmosphere? I've heard it has a smell when vented to the atmosphere I'm not so worried about that, seems like it should solve my future carbon problems and for $89.99 I'm def okay with that being the only drawback. So with all that being said, can anyone agree with just a pcv delete helping carbon buildup? Or have any reason why I'd HAVE to have a catch can as well or any drawbacks to just having the pcv delete?

    Thanks!!

You will still get some carbon build-up on the back of the intake valves, as some oil normally seeps down the valveguides and gets baked onto the back of the valve from the valve-overlap technique used for EGR.

You need a vacuum source to extract the gasses. Where does the Delete Ket get vacuum from?

Just get a catch can or build your own. A delete wouldn't workout.

Okay thanks. That's all I was wondering. So catch can + pcv delete it is.

I'm not 100% sure, that's why I asked on here. It does have a hole that mounts the vent tube to it. And then the delete kit that's made for a catch can actually filters it back to the intake so it creates a vacuum for sure.

I've had the intake manifold side of my PCV venting to atmosphere for about 30k miles with no side effects (120k mi. on the car). There's still vacuum whenever you're under boost. I do plan on blocking off the turbo side to prevent oil from dripping into compressor housing, and running both the PCV intake manifold & turbo side outlets into the exhaust w/ a slash cut Moroso nipple. IE makes block off plates & adapters to do exactly this, and it provides plenty of vacuum on the crankcase using the stock PCV system. The setup i have now cost ~$12 and is reversible in 2 minutes. Full "delete" is probably $100.

So as of right now, you only having it venting to the atmosphere and no issues?

Correct. Just pull the plastic line from your PCV to the intake manifold. Then buy a tiny $9 cone filter from autozone and jam it in the PCV (I think I cut the rubber on the filter a bit so it would fit), and a freeze plug to stick in the hole on the intake manifold. I can't remember the sizes but it's very self explanatory once you look at it. Just make sure the freeze plug is in nice & tight since it'll be pressurized.

so essentially you're just removing the plastic line/hose from the PCV to manifold. Plugging the open end on the manifold with a freeze plug and replacing the opening on the pcv side with a small cone filter from auto store for ventilation?

Sounds like a plan I guess it won't hurt to try it, think I'd rather use a rubber vacuum boot to cap off the end and maybe a very small hose clamp since that would hold the pressure a little better I feel and wouldn't ever risk "popping" out. But yeah, still sounds like a good setup.

The freeze plug seemed sketchy at first but I'm running a K04 and it's never budged. There's always this little guy if you're worried about it / ever want a boost tap. IE BOOST CAP FOR FSI, TSI, AND 2.5L 5CYL ENGINES

yeah man I'm also k04 , but yeah I would think a cap with a small hose clamp paired with the small filter allowing the pcv to vent, would solve my issue. Thanks in advance man! I'm going to run it as a little DIY project when I get around to it like with the rest of my car, if I like it, I'll keep it around, if not I guess I'll run a catch can + full delete.

no regrets yet. Entire DD42 catch can+ block off plate + fog lights cost me 110 with shipping. If I feel like maintaining catch can is too much, i will shift back to PCV again.
