i can do this at home and with the help of some guys i know
this is where i am on the fence...
the total cost as mentioned above is $4,793 for the warranty
if i do it my self, since the engine will obviously be out
do some upgrades from jhm and spend around $5K with parts only, plus some beers/food to say thank you for the guys who help me out :)
and i think thats the biggest thing with these b6's is the timing
and for the rest i do my own maintenance
In that case, I wouldn't waste money on the warranty -- if you have the space and talent / determination to do it yourself, the cost of the parts is less than the cost of the warranty -- just save the money until the day comes

For some, the timing components last for 150k+ so there's a chance it won't even be relevant

one thing i can tell you is they write those warranties to NOT cover some components. Now...don't get me wrong, im sure there are some awesome warranties out there and that i just had a bad experience with the one i had, but then again who are we kidding. They DON'T want to pay out for repairs and so they write the "parts covered" list a certain way. For instance...i had a Route 66 warranty that i bought through my bank. They covered timing chains and that's it. No guides, no tensioners, nothing. just the chains. when was the last time you heard of a chain going bad on this engine? they don't. they are a lifetime item that can stretch a little bit but the tensioners are well equipped to take up what TINY amount that they stretch. One other thing i found, is that if a "non covered" item, say the guide that ALWAYS breaks, goes and it causes the engine to need the timing service done and maybe electronic parts or new valves (whatever the case) they will not cover the repair because the failure was caused by a non-covered part and therefore they will not cover the "covered parts" because they were not the reason for the failure. The local shop explained it to me like this: if for some reason your oil pickup screen gets clogged and the engine is starved for oil and the bearings/rings go, i would be footing the entire repair bill of a rebuilt engine because the pickup screen was not on the "covered parts" list. oil pump yes, but if it fails because of a clogged screen...you're screwed.
Now i'm sure they are not all written this way, but for me, it was cheaper for me to cancel the contract and prepare to do the job myself. I couldn't stomach the thought of taking my car to a shop, being quoted 5-10k for the job, only to find out that they wont cover ANY of the repair and now i HAVE to fork over the repair amount. Even the lady at the bank told me they are scams. and they are the ones that sold me the warranty! Personally, unless you have the "unicorn" warranty, then i would run away kicking and screaming.

yeah i had to basically beat it out of Route 66. I asked them what was covered and they said "oh just about everything on the engine". so then i ask "what SPECIFICALLY" is covered... they came back with "its in the 'covered parts' section of your contract" i said "great... i don't have a copy of it, can i get a copy" they sent me something that didn't really have listed parts and so i asked again about what they covered. It seemed like they were trained to be evasive and not answer direct questions. It was irritating. It wasn't until i got a copy of the covered items and asked one by one if they were covered, that i got down to the nitty gritty. I don't understand why it has to be so complicated. They either cover stuff or they don't. When i called the bank initially they lady said to me in a snooty voice " you DO know that you bought the BOTTOM OF THE BARREL coverage for your car right??" and im sitting here thinking...ummm ok yeah i did because it was all they offered. She proceeds to tell me that not only did i buy the "bottom of the barrel" coverage, but since i drive an AUDI, that is the ONLY coverage they would offer me. ha! funny. their list of excluded vehicles goes like this "audi, corvette, lamborghini, ferrari, any bmw other than 3 series and any mercedes but c class...etc" I called and as soon as she gave me the real answer as to what is actually covered and what is not covered, i told her that i would be cancelling my warranty. She started back peddling and trying to get me to not cancel. WHY WOULD ANYONE IN THEIR RIGHT MIND PAY SEVERAL GRAND FOR SOMETHING THAT DOES ALMOST NOTHING? And to top it off, they don't cover the initial tear down/ diagnosis to find out what is wrong. hmm... last i checked, it wasn't cheap to remove the engine...
anyways...sorry for the rant. It just irritates me to see people getting taken advantage of just because they don't know any better.

    8. Can you do YOUR OWN maintenance? What proof do they need?
    ...and finally...
    9. WHAT IS COVERED?? This is the most important thing that we look for in these anyways, right?
I made 100% sure to see "timing system chains and guides" was in the warranty contract. Also said "...and all related components"

    EDIT:
    Language like this
