    2014 Audi RS5 certified

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hi everyone,

New here and I was hoping for your expertise. I've owned a few Audi A4's (nothing high performance) before and always had something happen that would convince me of their mechanical fragility. I kept going back because I love the looks, both inside and out. However, at one point I tried BMW and have had zero issues so far (435xi). However, I keep looking at Audi's whenever I see one (family member has a high mileage S6 with no issues whatsoever). Fortune has brought something to my attention that makes me think about trying Audi once more. What are your thoughts on a 2014 Audi RS5 (always loved the looks) with about 15,000 miles, sport exhaust system in black, dakota grey, the works... The car is certified pre-owned to 100k miles (maintenance done at the dealership where it was originally sold) and comes with the remaining free maintenance balance (Care package) up to 55k miles. Asking is $62k without haggling (target price?). I'll be using it as a DD and put about $20k miles/year on a car. I'm aware that I'll have to spend more on maintenance/fuel given that it's a V8.

    Thoughts?

As a owner do it lol. Nothing like a na v8. I owned a a4 myself and this is a totally different beast. Love the way it drives, awd, and can use it as a dd. It's a unique vechile not seen everyday as well.

Yesterday driving home, this 4series was behind me the whole time and at the red light i saw him bust out his phone, held it outside the window and took a pic.

That may have been me:)... Any thoughts if the asking price is close to what I should be aiming for?

Point of reference for you... I paid $52k for my 2013 RS5 16k miles. Carbon ceramics, sport exhaust, driver assist and titanium with Black optics in Prism Silver. That was 1 month ago. Also included was the remainder of the Audi care. I couldn't be happier.
    Go for it.

Using it as a daily driver, and you've already hit on this point, is how often you have to get gas. The tank is pretty small. Otherwise, do it.

$20k annually for brake pads??? Is that every one's experience or do you visit the track?

Sounds like $62k is way too much! Those are amazing deals!!!

He meant 20k miles annually. Most have to change brake pads around 20k miles, so you'll basically be changing pads and possibly rotors every year. A full break job at the dealer runs around $2500. You can get it done cheaper at an indy shop. This being performance brakes, it's highly recommended to change rotors when changing pads.

You will also go through a lot of tires. I'm at ~40k miles and on my fourth set of tires. This machine eats brakes and tires and fuel :-), so that's where most of the maintenance cost goes.

That makes more sense, stupid me... Still, this car likes to eat a lot! I guess that makes sense with what I saw in the CarFax report. At 13k miles, tires were changed twice already...

If he's putting 20k on per year I'd assume it's a large percentage on the highway. Might not be a ton of wear on the brakes

Keep in mind we're also comparing 2014 vs. 2013 in those prices. The 13's seem to have come down a bit. For me it was a no brainier. I loved my cab but my miles were adding up and it was time to try something new.. Like @ICU2 said above YOLO! As long as you can swing it financially.

They are great cars. Good luck.

Yeah, wear and tear highly depends on driving style. 80-90% highway doesn't mean less wear if a large part of that is spent in stop and go traffic, but yes if most of it is open highway with very little braking, then the brakes should last a lot longer.

    Hey OP.

I purchased a 2014 RS5 just last week. Basically loaded w/o the ceramic breaks, mine had 11.5k miles CPO 6/100k warranty. I got it for 60k even which is about 2-4k lower than the market price, so that was nice. I'd say if you have the funds go for it. The NA V8 is amazing you won't regret it.

Sounds like I'll need to offer a good bit less than what they're asking... Also, just checked the insurance rates for an RS5. I'm sure Insurance companies like RS5 owners as clients. The rates are astronomical! Double those of a 435xi...

Must be your history or where you live. My last three cars were a 2004 BMW 330Ci, a 2007 Audi S4 and now a 2013 Audi RS5. All bought brand new. They were all in the same ballpark to insure and the slight increase was due to the higher MSRP. There are not many RS5s in the USA and they are generally bought and driven by older, more mature and experienced folks, so the claim rate is relatively low. Try insuring something like an Evo, Sti etc if you wanna see crazy rates. Those cars are either stolen or totaled on a regular basis. The 4-series is either dirt cheap to insure or there's something else going on with your quote.

My best guess is that BMWs are just cheaper because they are more common. I just asked Geico (my current company - no accidents/tickets, even got free accident forgiveness!) and they told me that the main reason is because of expensive RS5 parts...

A more common car actually has higher insurance rates normally, because they are more likely to be involved in a collision etc. because there are more of them on the road. It must be a DC thing. Just for kicks I quoted adding a 2016 435 to my current policy on Geico.com. I'm with Geico, too. It would more than double my current premium or in other words the premium for the 435 alone is higher than my current premium for both my RS5 and my wife's VW Beetle combined, so at least for me the RS5 is significantly cheaper to insure than a 435.

Mine went up about $50 a month for a S5 4.2L V8. Prior DD was a 2007 Hummer H3 SUV that was a 5 cyl . Allstate as well. They offer those safe driving checks i get $40 or so back every like 4-5 months.

I concur. I drive mine daily and absolutely miss it when I am away from home. The car has been absolutely perfect for me and I am at 18K miles. I do baby it though, including a thorough check and oil change every 5 K miles.

Haggle. What's the worst that could happen? Pay asking? not a bad deal to start with.

Geico also told me rates are up a little recently due to cost of repair. Sorry if my $30k parts+repaint was part of that statistic

My rate goes down $20 a mouth after getting this S5 3.0T to replace my subaru legacy 3.6. I guess it's due to the smaller displacement.

Must be the area/commute miles. Every insurance company is asking around $1,100/6 months for similar coverage... (435xi is $550/6 months).

A whole bunch of factors go into insurance premiums. What the RS5 has going for it is that there probably aren't as many claims being made on them because there are just fewer of them on the road. Of course they have to look at the ratio on how many are out there versus how many claims are being made. Probably helps that the majority of RS5s are driven by older and more mature drivers who aren't wrecking them daily like EVOs and STIs. What it has going against it are the high price of parts because so many pieces are unique to this one model. The region where you live is a huge factor too.

^ A lot of my friends with Evo's and STI's were paying more than $350 a month for insurance just a few years back. My Evo's insurance was always higher than my STI, likely due to the Evo having unique parts and the STI sharing many parts with the RS, I and WRX. I never paid more than $100 a month on either of those cars (full coverage), and that was due to the extensive umbrella insurance policy I have, and many discounts applied to my wife and I. When I sold the STI in July my insurance was a mere $38 a month for full coverage. My Evo is currently about $60, but I also have my uninsured motorist tacked onto the Evo, bringing it to $95/mo. I pay less than $60 on my tacoma and less than $80 on my S5. Needless to say, I have an extensive list of discounts that are applied to me. Good driver discount, safe driver discount, low claims discount, umbrella discount, 30+ year old policy discount, age discount, etc.

When I was in the market for either the S5 or RS5 I reached out to insurance to find out the difference in cost. The RS5 was only $8/mo more than the S5 in my case.

Yeah, the absolute dollar figures depend on many factors. Things like expected extreme weather, garage kept, what you use the car for, deductibles etc. can drive up the actual cost and every state has different discounts. FWIW, I'm paying for the RS what you are paying for your 435 and my wife's car adds another $200. Early 40s, cars are garage kept, no extreme weather here in CA and we don't commute, but I still drive 14k+ miles/year. I keep pretty good coverage, $100 comprehensive deductible and $1000 collision deductible. Clean record now, but I had a hefty speeding ticket on my record when I first insured the RS5, but even that didn't make a big difference. I'm just surprised that you are seeing such a big relative difference with same coverage between the 435 and the RS5, when I'm seeing the opposite. And CA is flooded with BMWs and Audis. We probably have the most RS5s out of any state, too.
