    Tranny/Clutch question

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Pulled my motor and tranny for an engine swap, but was having some issues I need help diagnosing. First, tranny wouldn't go into any gear. Found that there are 2 "screws" that hold the internal shafts into place, and the passenger side one had backed itself out and was only held in by the motor mount, explaining why it would go into ANY gear. Problem 1 solved.

    Problem 2.

Little to no pressure on the clutch pedal itself. Inspected the clutch/flywheel assembly, everything looks great in there (Southbend stage 3 replaced just over a year ago by myself). My question is, with the trans off the motor and no slave attached, is the clutch fork supposed to be totally loose, or is there supposed to be tension on it at all times? Master and slave cylinder are both new OE Audi parts, no leaks anywhere, so i'm trying to figure out why there's no tension on the clutch at all. Clutch fork and release bearing are just kind of "there", and are able to slide around on the input shaft effortlessly, should it be this way (ball detent and spring are there and look good as well)? Any input is appreciated! Thanks!

The clutch fork and though out bearing should just move freely when not up against the pressure plate. That is totally normal. The fingers of the PP make it return and go back.

Ok, thats what I was thinking, been too long since I did my clutch, couldn't remember. I'm just not able to put my finger on what's going on.

So you have no pressure on the clutch pedal with the trans out of the car? Or in? Your slave cylinder may be bad.

Well, i pulled the trans and the slave. I have the old slave, and a brand new one in a box. I'll hook up the new one to see what it does, but i'm thinking you're probably right, bad slave.

the new slave , is it an upgraded slave or oem I see you running SBstg 3. the oem slave does not like beefed up clutch's. this happened to me after I installed my FX400 my stock slave was tired and could not handle the new PP. went to a metal slave and its a world of difference.

Not the cheapest part but worth it. if you get it from them and your online if a chat window opens up tell them what your about to buy and if there are any promo codes. maybe it was just lucky, but for me they gave me one for 15% off when I did that.

that could be a good option to lower cost at the time I just pulled the trigger. also the SS brained line helps to but that could be home made for less. like I did for my turbo oil and coolant lines you can find everything you need on summit racing or jaggs. I just did not feel like messing around with it this time. took the easy way out.

It's the metal version, had a metal one go bad, replaced with another metal one. Makes sense heavier clutches don't agree with the stock slave.

Look for Sachs 6141, that's the metal slave you're looking for. Can be had for 55 all day on ebay.

I've got a 97 so that's what mine came with, but after looking at the two versions of slaves, my best ASSUMPTION is that yes, it should bolt right in. Ask Walky, he'd know lol.

It looks like where the clutch line connects is different. Everything else looks great tho.
