Hi,
I'm planning to install an 01E 6-speed trans in my 2003 1.8 TQ due to my 01A issues. There are many combinations of gearsets and gears available for the 01E. I'll be having an 01E completely rebuilt and can select what I want. Below is one option that provides slightly shorter gearing in 1st and 3rd thru 5th, but also has a nice cruising 6th gear that would drop my highway rpm on the interstate by about 500 rpm.
Other options for 6th are a 0.73 or 0.71 ratio (or as low as 0.56 from a TDI, which I don't view as desirable), and 5th can vary from 0.68 to 0.87, but the 0.82 seems like the best all around choice since I don't want to drop too many rpm in 6th like a TDI.
01A
3.778, 2.176, 1.429, 1.091, 0.889, Final 3.89
14.70, 8.46, 5.56, 4.24, 3.46 (Overall)
01E
3.500, 1.889, 1.32, 1.03, 0.82, 0.68, Final 4.375
15.31, 8.26, 5.78, 4.52, 3.59, 2.99 (Overall)
I would be interested in knowing what most have been using. I believe the "stock" 01E ratios are similar but have a longer 3rd/4th at 1.23/0.96.
I'm also considering a Wavetrac for both front and rear diffs, and the high bias center Torsen. Not sure I really need the front Wavetrac, but if I ever want one now is the time to do it while the trans is being built.
Thanks for any thoughts.
