Need a little help diagnosing what I think is a flywheel issue before going to dealer

    Hey guys,

I've had this annoying problem forever but I always get the dealer saying they can't replicate the issue. I'm coming up on 20k miles and am determined to get it fixed with my next service.

Whenever I back in and out of a parking space at low speed I get a "marbles in cans" type sound from the front of the car - it is pretty quiet and I can only hear if when my windows are rolled down, in a garage and a car or wall echoes the sound. Only when the car is engaged in gear and just starting to move does it make the noise. If I drop it in neutral the problem goes away.

    I'll post a video shortly....

    Thanks,
    Chris

The video keeps stopping and buffering on my laptop so I am going to listen to it on my phone in a little bit.

When you take the car to the dealership, get the tech or shop foreman to go for a ride so that you can duplicate the issue with them. Noises, vibrations, and harshness are subjective to different people so something that drives one person batshit crazy could not even be noticed by someone else. I had it happen to me a few times. That way the customer could show me specifically they were referring to.

I don't hear anything on the video that sounds unusual but a few questions for you:

What Drive Select mode is the car in, does it do it in all modes?
Does it make a difference if the wheel is turned or is only with the wheel straight?

I can't see how it could be a flywheel issue, the flywheel rotates at engine speed and only in one direction, if you only get this sound in reverse then it's more likely a gearbox issue and a reverse gear issue at that.
Dynamic and possibly your Individual settings on Drive Select have all the diffs engaged, does it still make the sound in Comfort?

Doesn't matter which way the wheel is turned.

It does it in all modes. I will test this theory again though.

The sound is in reverse and when going forward. It almost sounds like when the clutch is engaging is makes a chattering noise. ...

I listened to the video on my phone and I heard a faint metal tapping noise. This is definitely something that you would have to show me or I would not hear it.

So the drive train has to be engaged and under a very light load.

Was your transmission fluid changed at the 15K service? I would want them to check the fluid level and condition. Also make sure that the axles are not hitting any shields.

Yes, very light load the issue pops up.

Whatever the scheduled service was at 15k is what happened. I believe that is at 25k, no?

The DSG/S-tronic Manual Transmission Fluid of the gearbox is first changed at 15K miles and then every 20K miles after that. There is also a DSG/S-tronic Automatic Transmission Fluid and Filter that is first changed at 35K miles and then every 40K miles after that. IMO the RS5 is actually the most labor intensive Audi to maintain that I have ever seen with the engine air filters, transmission fluids, and rear sports differential fluids required to be changed so frequently in addition to the normal stuff like spark plugs and the other wear and tear items like tires/brakes. Wouldn't stop me from owning one but damn that is a lot of stuff to keep up with.

Here is a link so that you can look up your maintenance schedule for future reference. https://www.audiusa.com/myaudi/service

Sounds like "Gear Rollover Noise" http://www.tccoa.com/articles/mn12ho...Diag-noise.pdf
If thats the case, its considered normal.
