Did this happen to anyone else after they installed their intake?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So it's almost 2 years later that I installed the roc euro intake. The S4 had a thermostat fail so my mechanic was working on it and informed me that the intake pipe has been rubbing on what I assume the ac line? Not sure but is this common or did I really mess up installing a simple cold air intake...

When I installed CTS it was close to the same pipe but I used a zip tie to keep it away.

My USP was too close for comfort so I wrapped the line to prevent any issues and keep an eye on things - it rubs a bit, but no damage with the wrap.

Not really surprising since the motor moves a lot. There is a reason why the stock intake has flexible pieces in it, which account for movement of the engine.

There is a thread on this with lots of examples of this exact issue. I feel its a flaw in the design of many of these intakes. In the sense that they did not take this into consideration by designing a support or something to hold it in place.

Yea this is news to me. I wish I knew that before installing this intake. Good thing this issue was caught early

Happend to me too. Not as bad... But just need to adjust the angle obviously and a good idea was mentioned to pop the hood occasionally to make sure everything is in its place.

I had it happen but not as bad after the mechanic reinstalled my intake during a service. Once adjusted properly it never touches but in case I did add a bit of foam to the bottom of the intake in case

I'll have to double check my CTS intake to see if it has moved at all, but when I installed it I was mindful of this and checked, and there was plenty of clearance between the pipe and the AC line. Like, not even close to touching. Especially if the pipe passes thru the head shield at its intended location, I'm not sure how or why this interference occurs. But in any case this thread has me doubting it so I'll be looking at it this weekend to be sure.

Last time I was at AP Tuning we noticed this issue - ended up using hose clamps to protect the line.

It's not an AC line its coolant. Easy change and cheap to buy the pipe from Audi.

Buy a rubber gas or other thick hose. Cut it parallel to its length and wrap it around the AC lines. Problem solved. Did this to mine and its been problem free and less vibrations. Make sure to get a hose with the proper I.D.

Same here. I'm not sure how the intake tube could ever touch that coolant line if the intake tube passes thru the opening provided in the heat shield.

When I did my install I clocked the intake pipe as far upwards as possible, away from the silver pipe displayed on the OP's attached image, without interrupting the pipe pass-through opening of the heatshield. Then I tightened the clamp onto the throttle body to hold it into place at the desired position.

This is exactly what I did, Advanced gave me the hose for free too. They had extra scrap laying around. I used clamps to hold it on. If you need pics let me know.

It's actually a flawed installation and not the product. If you install the intake properly you do not have any clearance issues. I've had mine on for 2 years and never had it touch nor have I installed rubber around the lines.

Good to hear. I am getting the ECS soon and was concerned with all of these intakes hitting the pipe. Seems like a support was needed to keep it off of the pipe.

The intake is connected to the throttle body by a rubber hose with clamps. My only assumption could be that people are installing the rubber hose too far on one side and not supporting the weight of the intake as it should.

I think this is the reason why Injen puts a 90deg bracket with a rubber grommet on the intake tube. Keeps the intake secure while the engine moves.

Yup, I have the Injen with the bracket to keep it from rubbing but I still wrapped my A/C line with some rubber fuel line and zip ties to be completely overparanoid, lol.

A 6" piece of split rubber hose pushed over the AC line in that area sounds like a very nice nod towards safety IMO.

Repairing that AC line at the dealer has to cost hundreds of $.

I have a USP Motorsports CAI intake and the intake tube is at least 1" to 1.5" away from that tube (even though it's larger than the other intake tubes by 0.5"). The heat shield physically prevents the intake from dropping any lower, so I have no issue nor concern. :D

    Good luck!

Can anyone give some more details on a fix? Maybe what diameter hose would work on the coolant/ac line? Is there a better material to use over others, maybe something to protect against heat, or cold, or both? Are people clamping it down or does it just stay in place?

Any help would be appreciated, as I won't be able to work on this until the weekend. Thanks.

I went to Advanced grabbed a tube 5" long or so that is good for heat, and cut it down the middle. wrapped it around the pipe and Clamped it on both ends.

I will take a picture after work if I remember.

It's 100% a coolant line for the engine, I replaced mine myself.
