Get a dipstick. Light comes on when 1 quart low.

I noticed this on my B8 a couple years ago. It took a few more miles of driving after I noticed the low level on the MMI readout before the low oil level alarm went off in the DIS. Best bet is to add some oil now. It should take about a quart to top it off from where it is now. Once I noticed that the B8 was drinking some oil I kept a quart in the trunk at all times in case it got too low while I was out on the road. I would also recommend buying an OEM dip stick so that you can get manual (accurate) readings going forward.

I believe the MMI actually indicates you are 1 qt low. NOT EMPTY. If it were empty, your engine would be fried by now. At some point soon, you will get a warning advising you to add a qt of oil(if it is in fact low). Some have had issues where the MMi or warning indicators were not accurate. In my experience, I have learned not to trust the oil level obtained from the MMI. But the warning to add 1 qt has been accurate. I know this because I have a dipstick to compare the 2 readings. I trust the dipstick. BTW, today added the qt I also keep in the trunk

As a B5 owner, I've learned to never wait/trust for the oil light to come on. I usually always check the dip-stick level. Typically if the light goes off (on a B5) low oil could quickly escalate to a clogged oil pick up screen or something else catastrophic.

TL;DR - I don't trust MMI oil level on the S4, bought a dip-stick for the B8.5 to provide proof positive (chalk it up as lesson learned from B5 ownership).
