1/2 Quart overfilled in the Q7. Drain or Leave?

I did an oil change on the Q7 last night and kept thinking the capacity was 8.5 US quarts. I stop in the middle of my fill and go to the manual and it states 7.2 quarts. I did the calculation and realized that I already poured in 7.7 quarts.

Would you guys let it go till the next change or drain out the excess? Keep in mind that this is a Q7 3.0T. If you've never changed to oil on a Q, count yourself lucky. It's a pain in the a**. The oil drain plug is right in line with the subframe and when the plug comes out, the oil falls on the subframe and then goes right and left. It's a mess of a job, every time. Must buy he Fumoto plug.

The oil level of any engine has a range, and that range should be shown on the dipstick. If you are above that range, you should remove some oil.

Does the MMI show that it's overfilled? I assume you don't have a dipstick...

By the way, I highly suggest an oil extractor. Since the 3.0T has the filter canister on top of the engine, it makes oil changes incredibly easy.

I'm honestly amazed that someone would make an engine without something as integral and simple as an oil dipstick.

I think it just doesn't come with a dipstick anymore, there is probably still a tube and a dip stick that can be purchased separately. That's how the B8 A4 is.

I don't use this word often, or say it lightly -- but that is retarded.

This, especially the bolded portion. All the B8 and newer engines are meant to be extracted except for the a few odd balls like the W12.

It is common place now a days since a lot of OEMs have gone that way. Usually there is a display in the MMI for the newer Audis.

I'm not too familiar with the recent Audi engines,
but where do you plug/install an oil extractor if your engine doesn't have a dipstick(is the "funnel" still there?) ?

The tube is still there but it is capped. Just pull out the cap, feed the extractor tube down, and suck the oil out.

While I can't speak for the Q7, my shop overfilled my RS4 my half a quart and it was fine. There is enough clearance between the oil level and pistons that the oil doesn't get whipped, and it wasn't overfilled enough to cause pressure issues. If you have an oil extractor, might as well just take it out though for peace of mind.

It's things like this that steer me away from newer audis.

"Why do they need a dipstick if they can monitor the oil level electronically?"

    "What if the sensor fails?"

"They can pay us a bundle of money to replace it!"

It's half a quart, I wouldn't worry about it. It's an Audi, it'll burn off in a few hundred miles. If your worried, run it and check your airbox for oil.

I have an oil extractor and I added dipstick to my 3.2l Q5...the stupid MMI reading annoyed me and I never felt confident with it.

Actually a lot of hood switches failed on the B8 cars so the MMI wouldn't show the oil level because the car couldn't see that the hood was open. Then Audi revised the part number for certain cars so that you had to buy the whole $130 latch and switch instead of just the $40 switch. They do scheme a little bit in my opinion on certain things.
