Resale value of MTs, post 2017

I'm about to pull the trigger on a 2015 MT S4. This won't really impact my decision of whether to buy or not, but I'm wondering what people here think... Will the MT B8s hold their value any better, now that we know that there will be no more MT offered going forward? Any chance they may even go up in value over time?

You might get a little more money from an enthusiast looking for a 6MT. Unfortunately, the boarder population doesn't want a manual and the book values will trend downwards as all cars do as they get older.

I personally think it will be strong resale wise provided the miles are not to high but how strong will it be I can't even begin to guess and as mustangg said it'll still be sinking $ wise just hopefully not as much. It'd help if all car companies across the board killed the Manual but that doesn't seem to be happening.

Great question though and something I've been wondering myself.

I doubt any of the car pricing indices would value the car any significant amount higher, but you may be in a stronger position for selling privately.

Only negative I see about selling a MT is if you have anything over 50,000 miles anyone looking for a manual is going to want a new clutch and flywheel in the car. And that is a 3k+ job.

Actually, when I traded in my 2010 for a 2014(both with 6MTs) I was told that my 2010 was very desirable since there were very few 6MTs being sold at that time. Just remember that there will not be any DSG S4s either. Not sure they will go up in value, but they sure will be more desirable to some and make them easier to sell. Who knows how supply and demand will work in this situation

Let me put it this way - the dealership I went to wasn't going to offer me any more money for my car if it were diamond encrusted and dipped in gold, and I certainly would not expect them to go out of their way to offer me more money for my 2015 6MT if I were to trade it for a B9.

I can't think of one instance in the used car market where the auto/dc transmission commands a premium over the manual counterpart. I can think of alot of examples where its the other way around.

I agree with this. May just be easier to sell... and further down the road even more-so. People now are looking nation wide for MT's and they are hard to find. If you have a MT on the market it will go quickly.

On the flip side... anyone who does any research on DSG's will know that those are even more of a risk with the mecha unit failures.

True but clutch is 100%. Dsg failure is prob 1 out of every 1,000

The value will never go up, I've owned a lot of cars, the only ones that went up in value are my 3 Defenders. Everything else (except older and barely driver exotics) drop no matter what it is. That being said, we sold our B7 A4 avant 6MT for $2.5k more than any other avants on CL with less miles but auto. We only had one interested buyer and was looking for this specific car, and was willing to pay the extra for 6MT.

A MT will sell for more on the private market.

Prior to my S4, I sold my 2004 Acura TL MT for more than any other auto TL. I did a search and my car was the only manual TL on craigslist at the time in the Bay Area.
KBB said to expect $5400 for very good condition. I sold it for close to $8K

This car may have more manual demand on the used market than new. Rather than being in a limited $55K luxury segment, it'll attract more enthusiast performance buyers in the $30K range. More of them will be seeking the 6MTs is my guess.

I would be very hesitant to buy a used dsg s4 especially as the miles go up. No telling the abuse previous owners gave it, and would hate to foot a 10k repair if the thing decides to go on the fritz. With a clutch you can kinda tell what kinda shape its in with test drive. And it's not a cheap repair but it's not terrible either and will be good for a while once rebuilt.

For reference, 2010 - 2012 6MT S4's decently equipped with ~50k mile are hovering around $28k dealership, nation wide, Down from ~$29.5 12 months ago. Based on recent trending on Autotrader i'd venture those cars will drop another $300-500 within the next 3-6 months then plateau. When i find the correctly spec'd car this fall - 6MT, P+ or Prestige without sport diff or variable dampers, Average mileage, I expect to pay $27k out the door.

Will this sort of trend apply to your B8.5? Probably. 6MT's are harder to come by but demand the same price as automatics even after 6 years. Maybe after 8-10 years if a lot of automatics have given up the ghost, well cared for manual B8.5's will be coveted and valuable just as the B5-B7 S4 are currently.

Seems as though Turbo'd cars hold stonger long term loyalty amongst enthusiasts, for their tuning potential. BMW N54 and Audi 2.7T for example are demi gods to many. Hopefully the 3.0T S4 dosnt go the way of the 4.2L in a decade. Though i fear it will.

    Just a guess.
