    2006 transmission Questions

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Question 1: Looking at transmissions for my 2006 S4 and I am seeing 4 different codes HHU, HKF, HYL and HVM. What are the differences between the 4 models? I have a HYL now do I have to use the same model if I replace it or is it only important if you are replacing parts of the trans for the code to be right?

Question 2: From what I have figured out I am having solenoid issues. It looks like it's pretty easy to switch out the valve body with a re-manufactured unit from revmax. If it is solenoids then that should solve it, but I keep reading/hearing about having to reprogram the software and 1 person told the Ross-Tech software won't do it. Does the transmission software have to be reprogrammed if I am just replacing the valve body and if so is it only something the dealer can do?

Question 3: If replacing the whole valve body requires reprogramming would rebuilding or replacing just the solenoids avoid the need to reprogram?

I'm trying to figure out how much this is going to cost me and which route would be the best way to go without spending more then I have to (I don't want to sell other toys to fix this one)

    Thanks
    Jason

    Be patient man.

Do you have any fault codes stored?
Have you tried changing the transmission fluid and filter?
Have you done any other work/diagnosis for this issue other than jumping to replacing the valve body?

I do have some trans fault codes but they are intermittent and most times when I pull codes there are none. These are what I got last time I did get codes.

I haven't really jumped to replacing the valve body, I have been reading about it and researching it for months. The main thing leading me to believe it is the shift solenoids/valve body is the way it acts. Most of the time at low throttle it will be fine, but it has been getting worse. Shifting from 2-3 if I am on the gas very much it will drop back into first, I get a hard shift (like its slamming into gear) from 3-4. Now I am starting to get shutter going into 3rd and 4th. going from 4-5 and 5-6 never have an issue.

Page 6 of this document about the vavle body seems to describe most of my issues. https://s3.amazonaws.com/sonnax-dev/...AutoChoice.pdf

Going off this fault code freeze frame data since it has the highest mileage recorded, your car has at least 121,691.82 miles.

Do you know if the Automatic transmission fluid has ever been changed?

I ask because typically most people start with the cheapest and easiest things first. After 121K miles the ATF can really be broken down to the point that it is not providing proper pressure and lubrication for the transmission to work correctly. While yes you could have an issue with the valve body, I personally would start by changing the fluid and filter. Hell I might even drive the car for like two weeks/500 miles and do the fluid and filter change again. That way the majority of the transmission fluid is new.

Cost wise, it is like $250 US dollars to change the fluid and filter compared to probably a minimum of $1K US dollars to buy a new valve body from Audi. It has been a little while since I have had to price out a valve body but they were not cheap the last time. If you get yours rebuilt then it could be less but I don't know how much that would cost you.

Most of the members here have manual transmissions. We constantly see threads about which clutch and flywheel to go with. Very few members here likely have dealt with automatic transmission issues like what you posted.

I'm trying to avoid spending $250 on multiple fluid changes to get the same results, especially if I change it twice and then still have to do it a third time when I do have to change parts outs. I talked to someone that had the almost the exact same problem and a fluid change didn't help. Revmax refurbishes valve bodies with all the solenoids for about $700 or I can get the kit to redo the solenoids for about $250.

That isn't a bad price for a rebuilt valve body. Try it out and let us know.

    You change fluid?
If you have vcds read 73-77 groups.

I have a VCDS and I posted the codes in post #4, but my questions in the first post don't have to do with diagnosing it.

I am trying to find out about the difference in the 4 models and the need to reprogram the electronics in the valve body.

If you don't want to do it yourself check with the local VW dealer, they have the filters and fluid. The one near me quoted between $270-370. I plan of doing the fluid change myself, but I have to finish rebuilding the front axle on my truck first before I deal with the Audi transmission. I would still like the info I asked about in case the fluid change doesn't improve it so I can be prepared for other fixes. I talked to someone else that was having the same issue as me and they said changing the fluid did not help the same problem they are having.

That would be tempting if it wasn't all the way across the country, shipping would be to 92203. Was there any issue with it before the swap?

So how much shipped to 92203? I would be interested if the price is right. I was hoping to just replace the valve body if necessary, since I could do it without removing anything. but if I can get a trans for cheap enough I would consider doing a whole swap. Do you know what code it is? HHU, HKF, HYL or HVM?

I am asking for the guys at the shop to take a look. Were there really 3 different trans part numbers for the same year S4?

Oh and I am not sure on shipping, but I had a trans shipped to NJ from SC and it was about $200. You can have the whole trans for $150 if you arrange shipping. It's at a business address with a lift, so shipping should be affordable. Use u-ship.com. Figure pallet, shipping weight 150lbs?

I'll PM when I confirm the damn thing is still at the shop.

yeah there is actually 4 part numbers HHU, HKF, HYL and HVM. I still haven't found an answer on what the difference is, but i would think if it's a whole trans it should be compatible.
I got The HYL code from this tag.

Just in case anyone else has similar questions and finds this thread I contacted ZF directly and they were able to answer my compatibility questions right away. As far as having to reprogram it they said as long as I use my original TCM I shouldn't have any problems.

I finished swapping the valve body and putting in fresh fluid a while ago, just forgot to update here. It's working very well now, has had a single slip or error since I finished it. Thanks dsgray16 for the good price and
