Question CPO car with warranty better than new car?!

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I am considering buying a new(er) Audi and the dealer is offering me a certified pre-owned (CPO) car with only 4,500 miles (it was a demo car). I test drove the car - it's just like a brand new car. Still smells new.

The dealer tells me that the car comes with an additional 2 year bumber-to-bumber warranty because it's certified pre-owned (CPO) and that kicks in after the factory warranty expires. The factory warranty is 4 years and since the car is 8 months old now the factory warranty is good for another 3 years and 4 months. So, considering the remaining factory warranty + CPO warranty, this car has a longer warranty and is being sold for about $12k less than a brand new A4.

So I'm having a hard time believing that this car is cheaper AND has 1 year and 4 months more warranty than if I was buying a new Audi, which only comes with 4 years. Only draw back is it has a few miles on it and new body style is coming out this year. But even then:

Is this a heck of a deal or am I missing something??

There is nothing wrong with getting a CPO vehicle. It's actually a good choice with Audi's. I bought my 14 S4 with 7k miles as a CPO. There are certain things that aren't covered under the CPO warranty like any of the radio stuff I believe. Read the details. The original warranty starts from the in service date and the CPO is good for 100k miles or the year term, whichever comes first. That's one of the nice things about CPO is the first person took the hit on the depreciation.

Thanks 14S4GWM, that's good feedback and thanks for the link to the CPO warranty, I did not now know it didn't cover the stereo. It is just weird to me how a CPO Audi can have a longer warranty than a new Audi... what's the point of buying one then? I mean, obviously, buying a new car has some benefits such as you get to choose exactly what you want and the car has only 1 owner (you) but from a financial and warranty point of view, why would anyone buy a new car?

Audi site says it covers "MMI components not related to navigation and sound system"

What would that be, the buttons? I'll take a look at my cpo paperwork tomorrow.

I'd look into buying the car non CPO and getting a Audi pure platinum VSC (vehicle service contract, commonly called extended warranty). It covers all the electronics. If you shop it out (FD-warranty), it's not much more than the CPO cost but covers more. There is also a "CPO wrap" that makes it like the platinum in coverage but it is more expensive since you have to pay for CPO and CPO wrap.

did you end up grabbing the car?!

I got a car just like that last month. Dealer loaner s4, cpo with 6400 miles on it. warranty until 2021/100k miles. a heck of a discount on the sticker price just like you said you would be getting.

As far as the cpo, since it still has over 3 years left on the original, depending on how you plan to own it you can opt out of hte CPO and save the cash. They already did the CPO checks so the car passed (assuming they did it) and you can put that money towards something else. maybe a larger down payment or the first few payments, etc.

If you ended up getting it, lets see some pictures!

I ended up stretching a little bit and bought a 2013 S4 instead it has 1 year factory warranty left + the usual 2 year CPO. I absolutely love it.

Here's a photo of the car, in the Malibu fog this past Saturday morning.
