    timing chain

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I use to have a B7S4, on which the timing chain guides failed at 120000 km (little early)!
This was such a headaches and very very $$$ to fix!

My mechanic has told me that the RS shouldn't run into this issue...

Can anyone advise me on if this is correct, or is the chain guides something I need to worry about?

    Thanks

Correct. RS4 doesn't share the same engine and the guides are much stronger. I have yet to hear of a timing chain issue on the RS4 in 5 years of ownership.

The RS4 guides are metal, not plastic, and don't break. Why Audi chose to use plastic guides in the S4 is beyond me.

I have seen camshaft adjusters fail on RS4s, very rare though. The o-rings for the upper rear timing chain covers that separate the coolant from the oil also go bad over time and cold temps don't help matters. Overall though the 4.2 FSI V8 RS4/Q7 engines are much better than the B6/7 S4 BHF as far as timing components are concerned.

I think the Q7 uses a very similar motor as well.

Correct, the Audi training guide covers both the RS4/R8 and Q7 versions as they are the same basic engine.

Yes the 350hp BAR engine in the Q7 is similar to our BNS engine but the biggest differences are in the crankshaft/camshaft, timing gear, and more....

Both versions of the FSI V8s came out at the same time and are big improvements over the previous B6/7 S4s. My previous post didn't need your correction.

I personally like the two sayings that one of my old shop foremans said:

1."I have forgotten more about Audis than all of what you currently know about Audis!"

    2. "I was working on fixing Audis since you were sucking on your mommy's titty. You have a lot to learn kid!"

Both sayings were and still are hilarious.

Hey eurogags: did you tune your EcoBoost truck yet?

Guess you didn't know that I've had that study guide since you started lusting about RS4's in magazines .... But it's cool...i see your following your favorite tuner back to ford....he should have a flash for you to run the 1/4....careful tho...its been known to pop motors...

Actually yes, I did just see his post. Some of us have things to do. Can't wait for this big snow storm that is coming now that I am all stocked up.

Euro's truck is pretty cool. Watch out it might beat your RS4 in a straight line, lol!

OP just to add to what others have said, if we weed out entertainment, RS4 guides are of a better design than B6/7 S4 and you shouldn't encounter same issues. There's a reason we(S4 owners) use one of RS4 guides during timing overhaul and pipe dreaming someone will make such replacement for other guides.

Hahahahahahabaha...no one has forgotten that you stumbled upon your RS4 at a fucking Carmax.

My truck is great and funny enough it's likely faster than your RS4 in a straight line.

Nice shot too, maybe check out the JHM tune review thread that bootlicker bumped, it's pretty devastating when people start chiming in with nothing but praise for the JHM tune.

This thread not only had me laughing but also questioning, should I still consider a JHM Tune? I’ve thought about getting rid of my RS...actually sold my 911 instead of my RS (true story)
