I used to think that the "quattro warning" in the Audi owner's manuals was pretty silly. Something like "Do not let the superior traction afforded by the quattro All Wheel Drive system tempt you into taking unsafe risks". But they are absolutely right. Blasting through foot-deep snow covered road makes you feel invincible.
If anything, on cars with all wheel drive it is actually *more* important to have things like ABS brakes and snow tires. You have such an advantage in acceleration, without those aids for stopping the car's abilities are quite "unbalanced".
That said, quattro works with torque applied and will transfer torque under decel load. If I get in a bad situation (somebody pulls out in front of me on a very slick road), the first thing I do is downshift. It's amazing how much decel you can get out of it. And if you are hitting the service brakes during engine braking, the torsen diff will help keep an axle from locking, too.
