Any ideas?? Doesn't happen all the time. Oddly enough it doesn't happen in the morning. Only driving home after work.

Yup, check the fuel tank seal for leaks in the trunk under the cover plate. This happened to me, and didnt get resolved until properly torquing the large plastic retainer ring with a special tool. Most say to just hammer it tight with a screwdriver and hammer, but pretty sure this will bind up the seal.

Also some places to check under the hood: connection to the fuel rail (I had a leak here) and around the injectors

is the hood seal for the firewall present?

Check fuel line connections. In the 300zx community, as soon as it would get cold, there would be tons of "my car smells like fuel" threads, as the one time use clamps would allow fuel past in colt temps. Solution was to put new clamps on. I cant remember what the fuel connections on this motor look like off the top of my head.

    This one should work.

    http://www.amazon.com/ABN-Fuel-Modul...tank+ring+tool

This is the one I got, the one above looks like it would be more robust:

I can't recall the torque value, but it was in the Bentley. Definitely torqued quite a bit more after I hit it with a hammer, then I re-seated the gasket again.

    Edit:

    The Torque is 60Nm

if you notice it more while driving and under boost, should replace injector seals. always a good place to start

Same thing happened to me, but only if I filled my tank up more than 3/4. The lid wasn't tightened down all the way and was leaking out, I just gently hammered the lid tight bit by bit to avoid binding the seal and no issues since.

Ah, a secondary purpose. I always thought that was for sound and generally just throwing more weight/rubber on the front. I've have several boxes of 'what is this for' weight reduction in storage. never really noticed a gas smell though.

the evaporation of gas could be greater in heat (the afternoon) leading to the greater smell.

The fuel supply line likes to leak where it screws to the rail when it gets cold.
There are only 2 things needed to make an Audi work properly - Duct tape and WD40. If it moves and it shouldn't - Duct tape. If it doesn’t move and it should - WD40.
