    to modify or not?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
so I have been reading many of you guys who have modified their cars and I thought to myself about doing some moding too.

    but should I?

why, well after modifying the S3 I noticed it could get pretty pricey as it may come close to $10k with all the stuff I would like to do to this car.
over all I was looking forward to seeing what the RS3 that's supposed to come to America is really all about. ultimately I was thinking of selling the S3 and picking up the RS3 in five years. So it wouldn't make much sense to spend the cash on parts to end up trying to remove and sell it when five years roll around. But the itch to mod is strong and I am not even sure I would still want the RS3 when it comes out cause of the difficult nature of buying a car that a lot of people want. Plus I don't know if the styling will be something I would still want if they end up doing some changes. So it makes things difficult to really consider when we don't know when its coming and what the final product will look like.

I was also thinking I wanted to wait till the warranty runs out in five years anyways but I think that some items can be changed without effecting the warranty too much. my main concern is with the engine and electrical. so that leaves exhaust and suspension mods open without compromising the warranty. again I don't want to waste money on these if I end up changing cars.

so what would you guys do. mod the car now and take a hit on loosing the cash when you part out or just keep it stock? stock usually keeps its value higher as well.

I say mod it. Too many unknowns for the rs3 and like you said, who knows by then what you'll want next.

I mean there will be turbo Porsche base models available, caymans, boxsters, 911 for a bit more. Audi will have their new rs lineup with turbos also. Making them fun to mod.

You can double cover the warranty by getting mechanical breakdown insurance from geico. If your car supports it, I would get eurodyne tune from home. Get a decent cel free downpipe and go stage 2. Suspension and other bolt on should not impact warranty.

In my perspective the mod bug has more to do with individuality, just think to yourself if you were to get a RS3, would you mod it?

If the answer is yes then that should tell you- your gonna have a tendency to mod regardless of what car you have.

Enjoy what you have, why the hell are you considering what your gonna do in 5 years from now. I mean unless your money cautious and wanting to save for the RS3(which if you're money cautious- you shouldn't be modding...lol) then I can see why you wouldn't want to mod.

Everyone puts money into what they love. Mine happens to be cars. I've had my S3 for a week and my wife doesn't understand why I wanna start dumping money into a brand new car. She spends money on purses and girl crap, this is my thing. I still have a 95 s10 that I have been working on for years. (It's bad a$$). But you have to determine what is your passion. It sounds like it's modding, you just need to jump in. But that's a tough bug to fight for 5 years. #modislife

I will echo kind of what everyone is saying if you enjoy modding go for it! Even assuming that you do go for the RS3 in call it 5 years and between now and then you spend 10k over the 5 years that comes out to around 42 bucks a week for your your enjoyment. Even if it is performance and looks I feel like thats not a bad cost to enjoy something in life. Well thats the kind of math I use to justify this stuff in my mind
At the end of the day you are doing whatever it is for yourself so again if you like to mod go for it, but thats my 2 cents.

I bought my S3 with the intention of trading it on an RS3 as soon as they come out (assuming that they ever do....). It was flashed before it's first oil change and was stage 2 before its second. In the long run it's not a huge expense to do downpipe/tune/intake but it makes a huge difference in how the car drives. I wouldn't have any regrets about modding it if I could trade it in for an RS3 tomorrow, and I would plan on doing the exact same thing to the new car.

well I just got back and a lexus driver just cut me off for no apparent reason. its the new RC350 rwd version. of course I couldn't let that happen so I ran after him after the right turn on the next street.

I know that his car is 306 hp and ours is 292hp but for some reason I was on the second lane and I was able to catch up. we both were going at it for sure. his was also a brand new car with no plates. so I know it didn't have any mods. I was thinking that we was letting up or something. after half a mile my front wheels passed him. I thought that was weird.

Sounds pretty evenly matched. Add ecu tune and it would not even be close.

I thought he would have kept pulling away with that bit more hp he has but instead I was able to not only catch up but I started to pull away slowly.

imo that 'out of the box' clean look is 10x better than the dirty modded look. tint ruins a car for me.

yea i love my car too but that doesnt mean im going to run out and put tint and some garbage wheels on my car. or slam it like a mexican lowrider.. or put every little bov, hose, cf intake, or other insignificant bits on it known to man.
been there done that. the only mods this car needs are e-codes, downpipe, stage2 chip, tcu chip, and vag com mods, and video in motion, oh and phone mirroring. DONE

I too have done quite a few mods on past cars. I don't like tint either. my mods will be very subtle and no bov. lol

I haven't heard or seen the phone mirroring thing in action. this one is new to on this car. whats needed to make it work?

I cross-shopped the S3 to the IS350 (same engine as the RC but AWD). That 306 HP engine is the slowest 306 HP ever. The engine is the weak link in an otherwise great car. The S3 is quicker to my butt in stock form. The Lexus lacks torque and the slushbox is awful. Glad you taught him a lesson.

Yes Mod it because there is so much potential cosmetically and performance wise.

well, he was actually being ass of a driver. when he was behind a few other cars and myself, he was weaving in and out. then we made a left turn but he was up my butt. I was actually tired and was driving the speed limit. after seeing all that and he was up my butt I guess I got a little antsy and also wanted to see what this lexus was all about. so I ran after him. lol of course it was late and not many other people around the next street when we made another turn.

for me, i wouldn't just "drop $10k on mods", as I like to see, feel, and enjoy the transition from each different mod
it's a slow process for me to grow with the car
if you're building a track car or show car then I can understanding just "dropping $10k"
oh no, I wasn't going to do all the mods in one take. it would be over a long long period of time. I just did a calculation on all the suff I wanted it would come up to about $10k. nothing crazy really. nice suspension, wheels, and a few other items. I am not going cheap just quality and stuff I really think I would enjoy. if I mod tho, I would usually plan on owning it for a good 10 years, not just 5.

the first thing I would do, of course would be to drive around with just this item for a little while. I was looking into the dog bone mount. it seems like it would be interesting. the next is the video in motion. I already spent money on the VAG com cable. that was expensive already.

I have never modified a car before my S3 (owned 2 WRXs), mostly because I'm young and was lacking money. I'm a big DIY guy and I absolutely love cars so from now on I am certain I will be modding pretty much every car I get, unless I manage to get a classic/rare car or something like that.

I track my car a lot and I really love working on it, though I don't do the major installs myself like downpipe, springs, intercooler.

After 6 months stock I put on H&R Sport springs and 15mm spacers. Then I did the CTS intake. APR turbo muffler delete. Burger JB1. CTS downpipe. 034 engine mount insert. StopTech 380mm big brake kit.

Also did some cosmetic stuff like tint, headlight amber tint, rearview camera added, vent diffuser mod, brighter reverse LEDs, P3 gauge, interior LEDs.

I have more mods planned like intercooler, diverter valve, possible tune (though JB1 is great), sound system. Again, I absolutely love my car and love working on it. I'm a big DIY guy and I love when things are clean and reliable. Everything I've done has enhanced the car while keeping it perfectly livable as a daily. I love the freaking thing so much I just wrote a whole paragraph about all the stuff I've done to it.

If you feel the itch, go for it. Start simple (like intake) and see where it goes. Working on something yourself and being proud of the outcome is a terrific feeling, especially on something you get to interact with so often.

oh I am starting to notice it. don't let me asking questions fool you, it is slowly working. I am looking more into the parts I have been thinking about. the only thing that is helping control it is that I keep looking at the European RS3. that usually calms the urge down and help me with seeing that waiting might be a good virtue. lol

as to the anti tint crowd I dont get it. it helps keep the car cooler literally and helps with glare as well. as far as slamming and idiotic spacers thats just a waste of money but some like them and its their car. spoilers and vinyl and decals... yuck.

I picked-up a glacier white S3 two months ago and I love it! I think it's perfect for the street. It looks like the trend nowadays are intake, downpipe and a tune. I think the stock OEM intake and downpipe is sufficient enough to 400 hp. Besides, these 2.0T EA888 Gen 3 engines are undersquared (small bore, big stoke) and it's pretty much limited to fully swing a big turbo. If ever I decided to mod, an intercooler would be first. Stage 1 and 2 increases boost and timing, which pushes the OEM intercooler's efficiency near its threshold. Anyways, I'm plenty happy driving it stock. Besides, if I want to play, I just take my supra out.
