Does anyone know of an aftermarket sub-frame for this thing? Or someone who can make one? Chrome-moly? Billet? If not, can someone confirm that the A4/S4 is EXACTLY the same if I find a good used one.

I liked the idea of replacing the OE unit on the rear shelf with something the same size but with a little more umpff, would be convenient having the battery in the trunk for wiring

would be interested to see any info on this if it has been done

JL Audio Stealthboxes work well for pre-fab units, but they aren't available for our car. Your next best bet might be a direct replacement for the OEM sub: http://www.audizine.com/forum/showth...ock-sub-woofer

OEM sub is free air so it and replacements will never quite match a sealed or ported setup. I wanted something easily removed that had an integrated amp so I want with an Infinity bass link. Install is really easy and sound is okay. Not audiophile grade by any means but much better than stock.

Another option is to have a shop create a fiberglass enclosure that you can secure to the rear deck....but overall volume requirements would have to be tiny. And then you still need to wire up a separate amp, etc

Were you able to use the stock wiring with that infinity sub?

Yes. Power is simple since the battery is in the trunk. For signal, you tap into wiring on the passenger side of the trunk. I posted a picture in the audio section here several years back

But now thinking about it, I may have used line level converters from the stock speaker wiring. I vaguely recall the low level wire tap not working great.

Bottom line, it's easy. Strongly suggest a small enclosed sub and amp with at least 100-150w true RMS, obviously more doesn't hurt.

Audio Integrations sells something for the B7 that I'm not sure will fit an RS4, but I've used their box in my STi hatch and it was perfect.

Funny. Good thing I read the rest of this before I went out and starting taking pictures of my custom sub enclosure to post.

    HAHAH, that's my bad...

to answer your question, no... what's wrong with your existing subframe? Are you running 034 aluminum subframe bushings?

It's starting to rust and wanted to start looking into options for the day I may need to replace it. Do you know the compatability of the A4/S4 sub with the RS? If I find a decent one in a part-out I may get one and toss it in the corner of the garage for a rainy weekend project.

    this is great! Excellent read.

OP, how rusty is rusty? I had my 1993 S4 apart last summer and after 22 years the front subframe, once removed, cleaned up perfectly after hitting a couple rust bubbles with a flapper wheel, etch primer, and enamel paint. And this car spent its entire life in New England, rust capital of the world. The alignment came out dead nuts on, and throwing in aluminum mounts completely transformed the car. I'd consider refurbishing the one you've got unless its bent, warped, or rusted through somewhere, somehow. Being less than 10 years old though, with the quality of materials Audi uses, i bet you're looking at surface rust and not malignant car cancer. Just my $0.02.

Everybody else: Thanks for the audio tips, I've got a good direction to start in to add some nice low end to this anemic Bose system!

It's pretty cancerous. More than just surface rust. It still has a few years left in it but it needs to be replaced eventually. (so why not now) Sucks.
