I'm not trying to be an asshat. I'm just simply stating that with a simple search on the forum, the answer can be found. People always get flamed for starting a thread when the information already exists. So before you get your pitchfork out...relax...."asshat".

Keep in mind quart does not equal liter. If you are buying quart bottles, you should pick up an extra.

Wait so you call him an asshat then post that wall of text? Jesus.

Manual transmission or automatic is sort of the operative word here. Manual uses 3.5L I believe. Automatic is more like 5-6L.

    Lies!

But no seriously. They're not sealed at all. They *say* the fluid is lifetime. Which means it'll last until the transmission fails, from old fluid, outside of the warranty coverage.

I think most people in here would recommend doing a drain, filter replacement, and full of the Tiptronic fluid every 60-75k miles or thereabouts. The fluid doesn't last forever despite what Audi will tell you.

Manual trannies are the same deal though I don't think Audi insists the fluid is lifetime. It should be refilled every 50-75k from what I've read.

For Tiptronic buy the ZF lifeguard 8 fluid. ZF manufactures the transmission so they know what they're doing when the make the fluid. It's identical to what the dealer will sell you but at roughly 1/2 the cost.

For a manual you have a ton of fluid options but not all are as good as OEM fluid. I put mogul Gear 300 in my b6 6-speed manual trans and liked it, but it was super thick wen cold and sometimes would grind the synchros a until it warmed up. I've heard great things about Fuchs Titan sintofluid or something like that but never used it myself. It's hard to find so its quite pricey.

You really should Search. The answer is multi-faceted, the Tranny fluid change process is somewhat involved, and there are multiple threads. You do not want to make a mistake because an error will cost you time and a lot of $.

Here's a great DIY that I'm going to try out here in a few weeks. I'm going with AMSOIL Signature Series ATF fluid. It meets OEM specs, so we'll see how it performs.

Because when Phil made that DIY you couldn't get any aftermarket fluids that were compatible. Not even the ZF branded fluid. I priced out a fluid change in my old b7 and it would have been over $600 after tax. I think close to 700 with the filter. It was outrageous.

My transmission guy told me that these transmissions are nowhere near as sensitive as people make them out to be. He uses a full synthetic fluid made in germany that is a fraction of the cost and ZF engineers told him about it. I don't know the name of it but total service is just over $100. I trust him hes done a ton of work for me and his shop is always packed with every car you can think of. Especially german cars

Interesting. I think part of where the worry about fluids comes from is that neither Audi nor ZF released any info whatsoever about what fluids would and wouldn't work and there wasn't a spec out there for fluids to adhere to. That and Audis continual garbage about "lifetime fill" so the dealers didn't care about it either. It's just a really customer unfriendly position to take. I think as the 6hp19 trannies are getting more long in the tooth for the b7s, bmws and Porsches that they went into, you're finally starting to see aftermarket support and more knowledge and information being shared and propagated.

Personally I'm glad to see these low cost and perfectly good options finally be available.

Still debating on doing this myself vs going to a shop. Aftermarket fluid makes it a lot more tempting as a DIY although I don't have a VAGCOM. I've dropped the pan on other cars but the refill process seems like a real pain in the ass on this tranny, sitting at 90k miles.

It's really not that bad. I've done it on a b6 and b7 and it's not too terrible. You're going to need a helper and you can probably borrow vagcom from a local but it's not that bad. Cleaning the pan is messy and the atf smells awful but that's the worst of it.

You could borrow mine sometime if you want. It's not a legit cable but it works. You just have to install the version of software that comes with the cable. Refilling isn't so bad. Basically just overfill the trans a little, then let the car idle for a bit until it reaches proper temp in vagcom, shift through the gears, then open the drain plug to let it come out until it just drips and then close it back up. At least that's what it was on my jetta that I think has same procedures.

I might take you up on it, I'm still figuring out which fluid I need, the pump, and how to jack my car up evenly on all 4 sides. After looking at it again changing the ATF looks time consuming but not too difficult.

Check out blauparts. They should have full kits that's even if you don't like their price you can base what you need off of it. I'll check to see if the adapter you need to screw into the drain pan is the same for a jetta mkv as it is for the b7. Cause I've got that too.

You don't need any adapters. Just two hex bolts for the drain and fill ports.

Any negatives to the fluid used in the Blauparts kit? It looks good I just couldn't find a consensus on OEM vs aftermarket fluid. Also, do I need to keep the car running between pumping new ATF fluid in?

I'll bump this thread instead of starting a new one. Why is there so much contradicting information regarding manual transmission fluid capacity for 2.0 b7 audi 6mt? ECS says it's 3 liters. Many people here say 3.5 liters. One user posts a wonderful copy from what looks to be service manual that says 3.0 liters. Then someone in this thread flames him and says they think it's 3.5 liters. Which is it? Thanks everyone

    Hi,

    I have a b7 2.0t 6MT. I changed the oil at 100 000 km and I only used 3 liters.

My car is now 198 000 km and the gearbox is still very soft.

I don't know if it's really necessary, but I'm planning to change the oil at 200 000 km because it's 5 years old so I already bought 3 liters.

I bought the same oil as the first time, castrol syntrans multivehicule API GL-4+, with the référence VW 501 50

Because people are stupid and don't understand the difference between a quart and a liter. 3.0 liters will be enough, but if the oil you buy is sold by the quart, you need 3.5 quarts.

And a litre is a litre in every country but a US quart is not the same as a UK imperial quart.
