    AWE DP resonated VS non-resonated

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Opinions? I'm about to pull the trigger on AWE downpipes to be mated with my exhaust and I'm going back and forth between resonated and non resonated. I don't want exhaust drone as I drive 90% highway miles, but i want a louder exhaust than the stock DPs and AWE exhaust I have now.

    Thanks in advance!

There are about 100 posts about this identical thing. Tons of vids out there you can listen to the difference etc.
If you don't want drone then don't get non resonated... those are loud and will drone. Non resonated are for no drone. You only have 1 choice if you are worried about drone.
If you have a MT then just use stock DP's. No drone with those. If you have DSG then you for sure want the resonated DP's.

sure there are other posts about it but nothing informative. Tons of videos with crap quality sound.

Question then is, stock DPs vs resonated DPs. is there a difference in sound? I would like a louder setup than i currently have with my stock DPs.

6 MT or DSG? AWE Touring w resonated downpipes on DSG is perfect. No drone and louder than stock downpipes. Do a quick search and you'll find tons of info in this topic

Yes, there is a difference between the 2.

I originally got the AWE resonated downpipes + AWE resonated touring exhaust. Originally I loved the sound and how there was absolutely no interior drone, but I wanted to really HEAR my exhaust. That said, that setup was too quiet for my taste so I went back to stock downpipes + AWE touring. I also have DSG and it definitely drones cruising from 6 > 7 but I love it. It all depends on what you like or if you have a lot of passengers or not.

so you're saying the resonated DPs vs stock DPs are quieter? i def dont want to go quieter so resonated DPs might be out of the question. I currently have stock DPs and AWE touring exhaust and the drone is minimal which i'm ok with.

100% AWE resonated downpipes are quieter than stock downpipes. if you want moar loud with your setup now, and don't care about spending some $$, non-resonated downpipes are your best bet.

There is TONS of info on exactly what you are asking... How do I know? I did the research myself before buying my set up years ago because I was not sure if I needed aftermarket DP's or not... the info is there...
    Regardless:

Awe Exhaust + Resonated DP's - quietest set up (0 drone with DSG)
Awe Exhaust + OE DP's - medium loud (0 drone with MT but will prob drone with DSG)
Awe Exhaust + Non res DP's - loudest (Most likely will drone with both MT and DSG)

For what it's worth I like a mean sounding exhaust and tried both. Started with resonated DPs but grew bored quickly and now removed and running straight pipe in place of the DPs. Like the sound now. Meaner/louder at mid rpm range and sweet burble off throttle in S mode. If money isn't a factor, start resonated and if you want more just remove it or try stock DPs.

Totally wrong... there is drone with AWE Touring /w stock downpipes. Enough drone that there is vibration in the cabin.

I have a b8.5 6mt and went non res with my touring. The video below gives the best example of what it would sound like. I actually tried the track set up but found way too much drone.

    AWE DP resonated VS non-resonated

Will resonated DP's change the tone of the touring exhaust compared to the stock DP's....not talking about the volume as its seems the awe DP's are quieter but what about the actual tone....had track on a DSG and it of course droned but the tone was nice...the touring ton is a lot different

I've got non res downpipes on my car with a DSG and it drones like crazy on the highway. It would be nice to find someone who wanted to trade lol. Or I still have my stock dp's, but i'm not sure how much quieter that will be..

Bumping this. Looking to do AWE Touring with Non Res DP or possibly stick with my stock DP's. I currently have Stasis exhaust system and freeway is no drone, but dron from 500-2700 or so. I just want more aggressive tone. Could I install the Non Res DP's to my current system? Looking for a route to take...thanks

Install the touring on the stock DP’s. This will probably get you the sound you want. However, once it breaks in, if you want it louder- you can always add the non-res dp later, AND buy it from a cheaper company (since there is nothing magical about the sound from AWE, or anyone else’s, non resonated pipe 2.5” pipe).

Appreciate that response. Like I said, I do have the Stasis system right now. If I can, I'd rather save the money from a full new system and spend that on a RS grille, fogs, and Carbon mirros...is it common to get DP's from someone else (AWE) to put into a system from someone else? Meaning, labor to make it all fit, sizing, etc.

I would think pretty much all would be interchangeable, with a possible exception of JHM’s relocated catted x-pipe system.

When you think about it, any system where you have the option of downpipes+rear section OR just the rear exhaust section, they would to terminate the downpipes in the same location as the factory DP’s. Otherwise you couldn’t have the option of with or without downpipes.

Great video. The car sounds perfect with that setup.

Question, how much louder is the non-res vs OE DPs inside? If the interior drone level is about equal in the 6MT I’d definitely pull the trigger on these DPs.

That makes sense. I'm thinking I'll see what the AWE non-res DPs sound like with my Stasis system and since I'll have the DPs already maybe down the road I'll pull the trigger on the Touring or Track edition from them.

    EDIT: I have a B8 S5 4.2L by the way...

As far as performance + engine longevity...can anyone elaborate on cat vs non-cat? As stated, I'm debating the non-resonated AWE downpipes, the JHM downpipes + X-Pipe, or the JHM High Flow Cat downpipes w/ X-Pipe. Obviously the non-resonated JHM downpipes or the AWE non res will give the car the extra sound I'm looking for, but what about potential build up in the cats that I've read about? Does getting non-res/catless downpipes completely remove in that part of the system?

You really should ask this question in the model line section(s) of this forum, which have the same engine as you. The 4.2L and 3.0T are very different engines, and stress level on our dual pulley supercharged engines is different than your V8. I would think yours would be far less stress, but I would verify from the ppl that live and breathe those engines.

Consider the cats failing as well. If you go track pipes and go catless, you will for sure need the resonated dp
