    Replacing my turbos

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
right now I have stock turbo's. I have excessive oil in my intercooler piping and what not. So im guessing that means the turbo's have broken seals?
Since im most likely replacing the turbo's should I stick with KO3's or go up to KO4's?

That's just from your pcv system. Unless your turbos whine or the seals are shot and burn oil in the exhaust, you're fine.

You are sure? When I spoke with mechanics they have told me my turbos are shot. the car has 170k miles on it. not sure if the turbos were replaced before hand, I am the third owner.

The car also "chokes" when you give the car full boost. at 4k RPM's it spits black smoke out of the exhaust (only when it reaches 4k rpm) and makes a popping noise. Any ideas?

If you don't hear and whining from them in boost and no burning oil out of the exhaust they are fine. Oil in the ICs is normal. The choking and spitting out black smoke is from a rich condition. You're AFR is off. Could be a few things. First pressure test, you might just have a boost leak. Un-metered air escapes, afr is thrown way off, excess fuel (black smoke) and backfire is the result. Long story short, don't replace your turbos. I've probably done 10+ turbo swaps on these cars, I have a pretty good idea of the signs of a dead turbo.

Oh okay, but what im saying is that it isn't the normal amount of oil in the IC. More than usual. like i said excessive.

Of course, you can always pay to have your turbos replaced and report back

Bahaha the mechanics that are telling you that you need turbos are the same ones telling you the amount of oil in the IC is not normal??? Hmmm.

You should be able to find a trustworthy Audi shop to get a second opinion. Maybe your turbos are letting excessive oil through but it sounds like there are other issues to take care of first. An often overlooked part in the PCV valve because it's buried in the breather system, after changing mine oil consumption went from a litre between oil changes to maybe 1/3 litre if that
the B5 S4 is like the mafia... there is only one way out!

Another unnecessary turbo replacement averted. Nice to see the community help each other out. Sad that there are shops that take advantage of people.

I found oil in the intake track of my car way back in 2002 with 26k on it. Still OG stock turbos at 150k and it runs perfect. Some mechanics are stupid and some just want to get you to do work you don't need to do period.
