    bump stopper/dust boot

Sigh, yes -- the bump stopper appears to be broken on my rear passenger side. The bump stopper is separated from the dust boot[?] so the rod for the shock absorber is exposed.

Side note: It looks wet/oily because the car was driven in the snow before the picture was taken.

Any idea what may have caused this type of damage? The ride overall is still fairly smooth, however I do feel a minor thump (or it could just be in my head) when going over certain surfaces like pothole covers that are receded into the pavement a bit.

Is this part individually replaceable or it part of a larger piece of hardware? ECSTuning does have the OEM part for sale (highlighted in red for the S-Line suspension). Would this cause further issues if left unattended?

    Thanks!

I don't think you need to replace anything. I think all you need to do is suspend the car, take the wheel off, and push the dust boot on top of the rubber stopper. Find something to keep it on if it falls back down, I would even glue it on before I bother removing the shock for that.

    Hi torrque,

From what I can tell, the bottom rounded out piece is completely torn off from the stopper -- mostly loose inside of the boot. With that said, would there be any adverse effects simply reseating the boot over the bump stopper since now it'll be shorter than the other 3 wheels? I do notice a weird thump when going over certain surfaces like pothole covers that are receded into the pavement a bit. Do you think this is a ripple effect of the broken stopper, or could it be a bigger issue?

I would check the shock out. Those stops don't just fall apart. How many miles?

I am planning on swapping out the torn bump stop now that it's starting to warm up a bit. I am fairly convinced that the odd thumping issue is a result of the bump stop being separated from the dust boot thus causing the "thump" going over certain surfaces -- the car drives perfectly otherwise. How difficult of a job would it be to simply replace the bump stop with a new one? I assume it will require full removal of the shock before the bump stop can be accessed? Will I need a realignment once a new bump stop is installed?
