About to purchase a Q5 - general questions

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hello,

I am about to purchase a Q5 and just needed some general questions answer. Car will be for my wife and our two kids.

    2012 Premium Plus 3.2 quattro
    -37,800k miles
    -serviced at local Audi dealership
    -Audi Care

He is getting the brakes replaced and new set of tires. Selling for 29k.

    1. Any major issues with the Q5 approaching 45k?
    2. Any issues with 2012 3.2 engine models?

    Thanks for helping out.

Sounds like a good deal on a solid vehicle. (Your call whether to push a bit on the price - that's in the 'dealer retail' neighborhood, but fresh brakes & tires are nice value-add).

No major issues - at least that I'm aware of - there are lingering concerns with the 3.2L and carbon build-up, but there seems to be plenty of folks saying that was worked out by 2011. I owned a 2012 3.2L and loved it.

Budget allowing, there are quite a few 2013 models out there. The 3.0L (supercharged) and 8-speed transmission are a match made in heaven, and that model year includes new MMI functionality.

    Good luck with the purchase.

For a nominal amount more, you can get a 2013 3.0T with the 8 speed tranny. As intimated above, that's a much, much better drivetrain.

    This. Far better.

And you get facelift exterior, as icing on the cake.

Geez after all this i went searching. Found one for $31k but with 44k miles on it selling because Lease is ending in Feb. There goes factory warranty. Same features except B/O system and 19's 5double spoke rims and of course the 3.0 supercharged. Decisions Decisions. I appreciate all the input.

Every brand has it's own flavor of headaches, that's for sure. 10 years, when you're starting with some miles already on the clock...I'd say it's a bit of a gamble no matter what vehicle you're considering. That said, I know some folks with '09 and '10 Q5's, both with well over 100k miles, and they're running strong and not squeezing the pocketbook with repair items.

Will it give you 10 years of service? I'd certainly think so. Will it cost much more to maintain than - say - a RAV4 or CR-V? Undoubtedly. Good luck...

thank you for the advices! I think the mileage is quite high too, plus the audi warranty is ending in 3k miles.. so like you said, it's gambling..

How many miles do you put on a year?

I wouldn't be concerned with it's ability to make it to 150k+ as long as you keep up on maintenance. The 3.0T powertrain is really stout and should not need much besides fluids/filters and spark plugs. Suspension will almost certainly need to be replaced (control arms and shocks) somewhere along the way if you're planning to drive it well into the 100s.

I do usually around 12-13k miles per years.. so that mean 120k miles + 46k that it already has.. so 166 total, of course i'll do regular maintenance, but hope it's not more than 2k/year after 100s

I would also say that the suspension's bushings will need to be replaced when you replace the shocks. After 110k miles, you'll notice the ride becoming harsher, which is pretty standard for any vehicle and bushings are cheap, but the install isn't always. Also you may need to replace the alternator and starter in that interval as well, depending on wear and tear. The emissions components, such as the catalytic converter may also need to be replaced upwards of 120K miles since engines which utilize forced induction do usually start to wear out those components at those higher miles, which can cause a drop in performance too, but that is again depending on wear and tear.

Just some things to keep in mind.
