    Smelling gas inside car....

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Hey guys. My allroad just hit 100k, and recently I've been smelling gasoline inside the car, mainly when I have the heat on. Almost as though my fan is blowing the gas smell into the cab. I don't know why this would be but I'm getting worried. Its been pretty cold around here in Northern Wisconsin, in the negatives lately. The gasoline odor is pretty strong... Any ideas what this would be? Thanks

    Purge Valve sensor.
Or SAI issues, or lines/evap can issues.

    ^none of the above!

Your fuel feed line crush fitting has contracted as is leaking. Look at the rubber feed line that attaches to the hard line/fuel rail above the passenger bank coming from the firewall. Run your car and you should see some wetness on the line or the valve cover below it. It's 17mm and you can tighten it down for a temporary fix. This extreme cold has made the metal shrink so much that it doesn't have a good seal anymore. It'll go away when it warms it but it's potentially dangerous.

ditto for the fuel line, mine did the same thing last year when it got bitterly cold. if you want to be cheap or if you're in a hurry you can replace it with 5/16" fuel line and a couple of clamps.

Just took my car in last week for this exact issue (fuel line was f'ed due to it dropping below 0 last weekend ) and just found out HEET (i think?) helps prevent lthe pipe from gas freezing or something like that.

    Fuel Tank Rollover Valve Nipple

    REPAIR NEEDED

    START DATE
    Apr 26, 2011

    AUDI ACTION CODE

    DESCRIPTION

The aging of the plastic material in the fuel tank rollover valve, combined with bending stress from the ventilation line to the rollover valve nipple, may lead to cracking of the nipple. If this happens, a fuel leak may result. Leaking fuel, in the presence of an ignition source, may result in a fire.

    NHTSA RECALL NUMBER
    08V197/11V267

    REMEDY

To prevent or repair cracking at the nipple, reinforce the nipple on the rollover valve.

Give me your VIN and I'll check for open campaigns in ElsaPro. Probably not the issue though since it's a rollover issue only (fuel leak they speak of pertains to a leak in the event of a rollover. And it wasn't a cold weather issue.
