    Fuel Injectors

I haven't seen much talk about fuel injectors on the '12 S4's. Last year I got a CEL for a rich condition in cylinder 5. Audi went to fix it and the injector fell apart in the tech's hands...they went on to do an engine decarb and replaced injectors 2, 4 5 6. Now I have another CEL for rich condition in cylinders 1 and 2. I'm filling up with either Shell 91 or if I'm doing anything sporty, I might go for PetroCan94 (both the top-tier gasses in my area.)

Did I miss the memo that injectors are weak on these cars or is there something I should be doing differently?

Hey amz, i'm also in Ottawa! Haven't heard much about the injectors being weak on the 12's.. The only thing I can think of off the top of my head is a small amount of water from the gas tank got the the injector and froze? The way I have always done it is I treat half tank like empty. In the event of an emergency I have gas and it eliminates possible problems with fuel pump working harder and possibly crap at the bottom of the gas tank!

    cheers!

The SA just got back to me, they're replacing all 6 injectors...not sure yet why. I'm really curious why the injectors replaced last year are getting replaced again...

Yay, another Ottawa member! Have you joined the Audi Ottawa club yet? We don't meet much in winter, but are pretty active in the summer - getting out to AutoX and Calabogie. We even come with out own mechanic lol.

Anyways, I don't really run my tank down into the red areas, trying to fill up between the last 1/4 and red markings. In the winter I always want to have enough gas to get out of town in case of a prolonged power outage or other emergency. I don't think there is a (sane) way to avoid a small amount of water getting into the gas in our climate, specially when it's +15C one day and -10C the next (seriouly, what the flying F#%@ is that about?!)...I would certainly hope that the injectors can deal with that.

I haven't heard anything really bad about these injectors yet. I would suspect they are either similar to or literally the same ones used in many other German DI engines like Porsche, BMW, Mercedes etc.

I'd like to see an inject that literally 'fell apart'. It could be they just had bad seals where the injector sits in the head or something. Who knows.

The older DI injectors like the piezos the BMW N54 used leaked often which required replacement. That led to idiots over-tightening them on reinstalling which caused other problems and they also required recoding the ECU because the injectors flow so much each one has it's own flow number stenciled on it. Again, some idiot technicians were reinstalling them either in the wrong cylinders or installing without recoding each one to the proper cyl, which caused misfires and rich conditions.

DI engines are not at all like port injected engines and if you mess up the airflow in the combustion chamber, significantly advance or retard injection timing or push an overly rich or lean mixture, the cylinder will misfire. A lot of technicians and so-called tuners don't understand this and how 02 sensor readings don't translate reliably to the "local" mixture near the plug and why that's important, why it misfires etc. They just read the 02 sensor and check codes and call everything ok and that's unfortunately not how it works.

So, final update: 2 injectors were found to be leaking, so dealership replaced all 6 as standard practice. No word on why or how, but they found no carbon buildup on the engine. Would running injector cleaner through the tank every 2-3 months help prevent this without doing anything bad to the engine?
