another c5's journey back to life

alright so where do i begin. car is a 2000 a6 2.7t with the 6 speed. bought it around november for 800 bucks. getting it to my house from florida cost 650. clean title with 158,000 miles on the clock... i know, its up there.

I wanted an s4 and decided since i already have a b5 2.8 as my daily driver, i dont really want another car thats basically identical. so, decided to look at some a6's. found this car, thought to myself, damn, its kinda shot but its a 2.7 6 speed... it ran, but had a random misfire CEL, engine ran like poop at idle. made an offer and honestly, i was shocked i got it so cheap. at the same time though i knew id be in for some extensive repairs and thats why i got it for 800 plus 650 for shipping.

thats all i knew or saw when i bought the car over the internet. figured, screw it, worth a shot.

discovered all these things upon getting the car. on the bright side, it started up first try, just ran like crap, which i wasnt happy about but what do you expect from a 800 dollar audi. replaced all those things in the pictures, including front hood strut, rubber seal for trunk, Hvac blower motor resistor which i got for 20 bucks from friend and center cup holder which i got from twizz for 10 bucks.

now to the real problems. car had cel p1340 - bank 2 cmp/ckp sensor signals out of sequence and p0300 - generic random misfire.

changed oil, plugs, fuel filter, cleaned maf sensor and tried swapping coils around. i must note there was oil on every plug, which was great. cleaned that up and tried it again, same thing. valve covers came off.

i wanted to see how the cam lobes were looking, and counted the rollers between both cams on each side. as most of you know, this method can be deceiving and you will get maybe a half roller here or there depending on the motors mileage and etc.

so i just decided to do the timing procedure because i thought maybe someone did it wrong. the motor has 158k, someone had to do the timing for sure i thought. Did a compression test on a cold motor and got 150 on drivers side and 140 on passenger side. Figured that was still acceptable, at least for now. i broke into it with help from my father, he likes cars thankfully and i got to use his tools which is a plus. dont have a picture but im guessing the guy didnt have a cam locking bar because there were white out marks on the timing covers, cam sprockets, and harmonic balancer. i used a locking bar and basically knew off the bat the timing was off because the bar didnt line up.

My dog supervised the whole procedure. so yea, shoot me now, i painted the bi pipes and both aluminum pipes that go to the turbos. i did well on the aluminum though, not some half ass no prep job. moment of truth. started her up, better.. but still CEL. checked it again, now only p0300 - random misfire. at this point i was frustrated, but said let me check all connections on coils and icm delete points. turned out to be an icm delete connection, it wasnt fully pushed in even though i thought it was. started it up, no CEL, now i was all smiles till i reminded myself off all the cosmestic stuff i had to fix.

Look like previous owner cut the cats out, car was registered in florida.

got the grill from twizz for a good price, wheels off ebay for 500, door blades for 165, tires for 600 with full balance and alignment.. And also got these headlights lenses from twizz.

After spending about 3 times what i paid for the car just on parts, fluids and etc, im almost there. nearly. few problems left.

where can i get a new key, not from stealership, that actually works. key i have right now is dead i think. changed battery and still no go. alarm works and doors open with key itself but not electronically.

the c5 has those central air vents that run to rear .. is there a trick to have the air go to the back? I tried about everything and only the front vents work. top, center and bottom. initially the blower motor didnt work and i dug into it and it was a burnt cable on the blower motor resistor. changed resistor and fixed cable, got blower to work but havent figured out how to get heat or a/c to rear seats.

i replaced the memory seating pad thing on drivers door. when i press the buttons the seat and mirrors move. how the hell do i program my settings so they save?

air bag light is on but i need to vagcom it and go from there.

and last but not least, what do you guys think about painting those reflective chrome inserts that are attached to the headlight lenses? I wanted to paint them black with engine enamel. before i do that, tell me how good or bad of an idea it is. wanted to do clear corner mod also.

Think thats all my questions for now!

    Cheers

ahh, I forgot to ask which headlight bulbs you guys recommend. i know there are phillips, sylvania, flosser and morimoto. I was thinking of going like 6000k or somewhere around there, like a slightly blueish light, with white fogs.

and for the record, i made sure to mask off the portions of the bi pipes that go into the TBB and intercooler connections. same for the aluminum pipes that go to the turbos. the portion that enters the turbo and goes into the rubbers boots up top by the y-pipe were masked off. didn't want paint on the entire pipe. don't know if that makes a difference but it made me feel better.

"i replaced the memory seating pad thing on drivers door. when i press the buttons the seat and mirrors move. how the hell do i program my settings so they save?"

Put the seat in the position that you want and hold M and whatever button (1-3) you want to save your configuration to. Also, if you move the mirror adjustment knob to the right side, the mirrors will automatically pan down in reverse so you can see the curb

Nice work though! I always like seeing people bring these cars back to life! It does look like somebody cannibalized the interior for some reason.

Thats the trick. Thank you. I was pressing M by itself and then holding either 1, 2 or 3.

thatll be a fun car, go with the morimoto bulbs for best bang for the buck, but get 4300k for the most light, 5000k will give you blueish light with some sacrifice in lumens but 6000k will be straight blue don't do that, even though i dont share the road with you blue light is painful for others at night.

hmm so 5000k is right around where i want to be. you have a good point about the blue light being annoying when a car is pointed directly at you.

I read that the philips osram bulbs put out the best light or lumens but when i look at the price of the morimoto bulbs, its hard to pass that up. depending on who you ask or what review you read, you get different info.

another c5's journey back to life

bought all this a while back but didnt have time to install it. Its finally on, nothing you guys havent seen before. Apologies for shitty pics. Installed rotors and pads and then installed lines the day after. also picked up a vagcom cable along the way so now I can actually scan the car. I bought mobil 1 gear oil and before i was about to pour it in, i said to myself, why dont you check the specs of this shit just in case. Turns out it was GL-5 and bad for our brass synchros. Returned it right away. Couldnt find oem gear oil for tranny and diffs so I used the redline mt90 GL-4 instead. Wanted to buy the Fuchs (think thats how it is spelt) brand gear oil but my guy didnt have it in stock. Even got that old crusty expansion tank replaced with an original.

Cut a clamp and decided thats how I was going to stop these wires from moving around for now.

No check engine lights on but I do have the airbag light and looks like its drivers side airbag igniter resistance too low n95.

From what I understand, it can either be the connection to the drivers seat airbag, the steering wheel airbag itself or connection, or possibly the steering stalk assembly behind the steering wheel. If anyone has a better idea of what I need to replace, drop a line and help a brother out!

Other than that, once she is registered, all I plan on doing for now is front suspension refresh (CA's, tierods and shocks), rear struts and then when I save some cash, buy a full exhaust system, motor and tranny mounts, drive train stabilizer, and fatter sways. The front sway looks pretty fat but the rear one is a joke. Probably go stage 1, maybe get nice smic's, who knows.
