    Fender flare removal

I have a 2008 S-line Q7 that has the black fender flares over each wheel. These flares have not aged well and look very faded and the rubberized coating is coming off in places. Does anyone know how to go about removing them so I can sand them down and repaint them? Or maybe I'll just leave them off if it doesn't look too terrible.

mine are not worn but i would like to remove them as well. they're held on with doublefaced tape. if you wind up removing them please post before/after.
i have contemplated painting them body color as well.
