    Feeler: DMV Snowshoe Trip

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Just hoping to spark some interest since there are a few of us that do partake in the winter sports, looking at a weekday or a weekend trip depending on everyone's availability.

Also consider lodging, separate condos or a rental home but again, this depends on everyone availability.

    Chime in on your thoughts

That's what me and Edgar were thinking as well; late Jan might be too early and it's all dependent on the weather coming through as well.

If weekends are tough for folks, we could do a weekday run up to Whitetail http://www.skiwhitetail.com/winter. Decent trails for a local mountain. I would not suggest going on a weekend though, the lines are nutz.

I generally go twice a season for the past three years except last year; went once cuz of my Colorado trip.

It's one of the better places in the MidAtlantic area unless you want to do Seven Springs in PA.

Agreed. It's the closest thing to a real 'resort' around here. Heard good things about Seven Springs, but never been.

yeah i've never been to seven springs but snowshoe is almost a real mountain. short runs but at least it's steep on the back side. with a good snowfall, i bet its epic, the one time i went the snow was meh and half the runs were closed, but they did have the back side open which was fun.

do they have any good trees?

You will...coming from a CO to MiDA snow resort, you will.
And ya, snow totals here are a joke compared to resorts out west. I was checking out Heavenly/Squaw and they're at 200+ for the year; I'm contemplating a trip out west but flights be expensive.

yeah, honestly when i ride out here i just hurt my knees lol. ice isn't great for falling on. if you end up in tahoe, i like Kirkwood wayyy more than heavenly or northstar. have not been to squaw but heard great things. Tahoe gets tons of snow but also a lot of sun so its not quite the same as the dry pow you get at altitude in the rockies. kirkwood was mostly trees so it stayed dry.

Utah is the place to go out west. I have refused to do any skiing or riding since I came back from Utah because I'm just disappointed.

Snowbird and Brighton are the best, the Canyons is also really good. Park City is good, but all about the tourists, the locals all ride at Brighton first with Snowbird and the Canyons following behind.

utah is pretty good. you can't beat the proximity of the slopes to the airport. i've timed myself, from when i literally stepped off the plane to when i'm in the chairlift line is 45minutes.

altho, jackson hole is starting to get to that level of proximity. (and will beat utah in another year or 2). they renovated/rebuilt their airport. and more and more airlines are now offering directs.

i've been to JH a number of times. it really only a mountain for intermediate advanced to expert/pro level riders. they don't rope off cliffs and expose chutes (neuter) inbounds terrain. you WILL fuck yourself up if you don't know what you are doing. i never really have to worry about noobs plowing into me because everyone on the mountain knows what they're doing.

Been to Tremblant too. Very folksy resort feel. I flew, but a road trip wouldn't have been bad either.

I ski. I ended up taking a lesson at snowshoe last year after taking plowing over a girl on our second day which has helped me a lot, but I'm still very nervous out there even on a green slope. I just need more time to get comfortable.

I've done the road trip to Tremblant twice now. It's not that bad. Takes like 12 hours or so IIRC. Quattro/AWD and/or Winter tires are a must up there though.

that's fair, i book trips last minute and the cheapest flight to JH with a shit ass layover was 800, i booked my ticket from DC-> dubai -> india -> DC a few days ago for 925, but it was an exaggeration for sure and i think that the only reason my ticket wasn't 1300 like usual is b/c of the latest ISIS scares.

the one thing i can suggest to new riders is to keep in mind that snowboarding in deep snow is totally different than snowboarding in packed snow. i.e. when i moved to colorado i had to learn a totally different technique, where edges don't matter one bit. IMO learning in real snow is more fun, because it doesn't put as much of a tax on your ass and knees.

also my number one suggestion to newbs is to go faster haha. can't get on an edge with 0 speed, and no control without getting on an edge. i compare to a jet ski. without throttle there's no grip lmao! oh and if your'e going too fast to control, you have only two options: (1) sit down and go slower (2) stay up and go faster. bunny hill just doesn't have enough grade. i claim no liability over you crazy kids decking children though.

I learned this the hard way...embarked down an embankment coming from one of the peak 8 trails at Breck, hit soft powder at base and went face first into the snow!

Guess I didn't provide enough of lift that I thought I did so when I went from packed to powder, poof!

Powder is also a lot funner to ride.

haha nice. yup as long as its steep enough, pow is super fun. i've also had to spend over 10 minutes getting out of a tree well though. shit is like quick sand lol, if i hadn't had a friend who was behind me and saw me go in and waited for me, i probably would've been stressed out. neck deep in snow blows... unless its super steep
