ECS – Front 2 Piece Brake Rotors

So installed these ECS Front 2 Piece drilled and slotted rotors on my S3 today:
    https://www.ecstuning.com/Audi-8V_S3...raking/Rotors/
Need to put some miles on before I can give a review of the rotors. I had these rotors on my 1M Coupe and they were excellent, so I’d assume the same for the S3.
Install was easy enough, fitment is great. Look great on the open wheel.
In the next few days I will install the StopTech Rear 1 piece drilled and slotted (https://www.ecstuning.com/Audi-8V_S3...ors/ES2996766/ )

For those wanting instructions on replacing the rotors see below. Also note that NEW carrier bolts are required each time you remove the carrier. Apart from the obvious tools you will also need a 200Nm torque wrench, breaker bar, sockets. Scrub off the rust and a good idea to put some anti-seize on the hub before attaching new rotor.

Those look good..let us know if you can "feel" the weight reduction of 5+lbs per rotor. Interested to know. Thx

So after a week of driving my initial thoughts on these rotors are that they have a noticeably better bite over stock with OE pads. No vibes. Look great. For those not wanting to spend huge on a BBK, then these rotors will do you well.

Will be installing the StopTech rears this weekend.

Yes, $250 cheaper and IMO rears don't need 2 piece on an S3. The StopTech's match the ECS front design + added performance and cooling.

Had to chuckle at the ECS "Made in China" debacle, while the StopTech's also made in China :)

nice! its going to look great.

yep, just because it's made in china doesn't mean its low quality.

Yes, you need a special 14mm Triple Square (stubby) socket tool to loosen the carrier. Torque specs are 90Nm with and extra 90 degree final turn.

Hi Roadrunner thanks for the awesome post and detailed how-to and pics.

I'm in the UK and have just ordered the ECS 2 piece rotors from awesome GTI together with the stainless original fit full brake line kit and have Castrol Rect Performance dot 4 fluid ready for a full fluid flush.

Really looking forward to getting these on ! ;o)

Also quick question re. these being directional - are there markings on them to show which side is which ? Pretty much going to work from these pictures.

Is it worth painting the hats at all before fitting or are they unlikely to corrode being alloy ? Painted my OEM hubs twice so don't want to have to do these once fitted.

    Cheers ;o)

There should be an indicator depicting which is left and which is right. But if not you want the slots and drilled holes to face forward in a "digging" fashion not backwards in a "sweeping" fashion.

Where are you getting all these nice diagrams and guides from? Is there a PDF for the car? I'd love to have all the torque specs and diagrams like you keep posting. Thanks.

The ECS ones are, not the StopTechs. Really unnecessary to have 2 piece on the rear of a S3.

Just wondered if anyone has the technical spec for bleeding the brakes - what is the correct sequence and do I have to do anything with the ABS pump using VCDS or bleed the master cylinder ?

    Thanks in advance.

Not sure why Audi do from the closest to the reservoir to the farthest? BMW does the other way from farthest to closest.

Mine is the M14 bit built into the 1/2 inch socket like a torx socket in appearance so yes it's too long. I've ordered a shorter one 43mm long for an impact driver so hopefully that does the trick. ;o)

Hopefully the impact bit I've ordered will be short enough I'll also call AUDI to see if they sell it. Failing that, what's involved in removing the upper control arm from the hub ?

    Thanks for your help ;o)

Just for comparison could you measure how short your stubby M14 is please - the one I've ordered is 43mm.

    Thanks again ;o)

Looking to either get these and make my own adapter for some calipers or get a STOP TECH BBK.

Just wanted to check up and make sure there rotors were holding up?

Would you buy again or get a BBK?

    Thx

IMO, BBK on the S3 is overkill unless you are seriously tracking the car, but then you'd probably want a car which is more suited for the track. The ECS rotors are great and give a good sharp bite with OE pads. I ran these ESC rotors on my 1M Coupe previously and they saw heavy track use with zero issues (unlike the OE rotors which kept causing vibes)

I've had mine on all four and love 'em. Two roadcourse track sessions and no issues. I also have ECS's SS brake lines installed and high temp brake fluid. The additional pedal feel is confidence inspiring, but I can't honestly say if it's due to the rotors alone. I've always updated my lines and fluid on all my previous cars that were put on the track.

I agree with Roadrunner on the BBK comment. I'm not the track rat I used to be and find that my improvements I've made are ideal.

Good to know that you track yours with stock calipers. Same thing with me, I only will hit the track 1-2 times a year, I was thinking rotors and maybe more aggressive pads and the SS lines.

Failed to mention, I run EBC yellow's up front for track sessions. Not diggin' the dust, but medication helps
