roof racks/boxes

I am looking to purchase a new roof rack (bought my Q used and it didint come with the cross bars ) and a cargo box. Does anyone have pictures and/or suggestions on what looks and functions best on a Q5? Also any suggestions on where to shop for these at a brick and mortar store?

buy OEM crossbars in the classified section. they come with every q5/sq5, so you wont have a hard time finding them for >$125 shipped

We bought a Thule Force (M 624?) for my wife's Q5. It mounted right to the factor cross bars and was super simple. Unlike the older models, this one opens from either side, making loading very easy. Drove 1600 miles with it without an issue. We picked ours up at EMS, the box that is. If you buy the bars from a third party, make sure the Audi torque wrench is included as it breaks at the right tightness and without it I can easily see stripping a screw/mounting hole

Hell...I would have given you the ones off my old SQ5.
They were still wrapped in the cardboard they came in.
I wound up just throwing them in the back when the insurance company took it.
I will probably never need these that came with the new one, unless of course I sell them.

The dealer may have some to give you for free, mine did. The salesman told me most Q5/SQ5 owners return them due to irritating noise they make at highway speeds.

I can't stand the placement on the factory bars and that you can't place them anywhere else due to the dimples.

I'd prefer that the don't rake backwards like I'm shooting a missile.

This was a problem with my old vehicle to and aftermarket bars allow for different placement but they are over $600 and I'm not sure it bugs me that much.

You really should check the dealership for some freebies, or maybe find some at a salvage yard for dirt cheap.

I heard on some reviews that oem bars have a chip inside for stability control. (But might be BS). Also the one from 2012 prior won't fit in 2013 + . they can be found for cheap! Good luck

Your dealer most likely has a few laying around. Ask the service dept. if they have any from the loaners.

Here is my issue with OEM bars. They can't be moved to provide a more level box position. I had the same issue with my previous vehicle and only the Thule aftermarket ones allow for movement.

Stock in stock locations.

also looks like the hatch can open without any issues. my thule force xl, even when mounted in the most forward position possible on OEM crossbars, still impedes with the full opening of the hatch. that's my only complaint - otherwise, the box is great!

Pretty sure that Thule makes the OEM ones. Just took off the OEM ones and next to my aero blades they're about identical other than the aero shape and foot pods.

If that was directed at me, I haven't switched at all. Those are images of RPI Equipped vehicle.

Yah, being able to move the bars forward helps with allowing more gate clearance.

I think I'm going to bite the bullet and get a set and not use the OEM ones.

I was able to get some OEM bars from a forum member and just picked up a Thule sonic XL. I thought I wanted the M but once on top of the vehicle it looked stubby so I opt for the XL. Quick pic, will post another once I get summer wheels back on and decent shot.

One should consider this only if they want to overspend a absurd amount of money. Received and email back and the 830T is $1700, paint $500, shipping to NY $350. It's nice but not that nice.

I like the bars to stick out a bit for when I strap my surfboards on top. with that concept I was thinking of getting other bars and using the stock feet. I hate the freeway noise with my stock bars (even though it's not much). Looking at the aeroblade or whispbar options.

I somehow doubt any bar is quiet enough for the sunroof to be open other than city streets less than 40 mph.

With that said I keep waffling I love the look of the bars on, hate the noise. Keep putting the bars on/off/................................................on ..

thule roof boxes are on sale for 20% off at rei right now. i got mine around this time last year. the force xl prevents the hatch from opening completely, but it wasn't the end of the world for me.

I don't think I need an XL I can reasonably predict that my wife or I would scratch the hatch because we'd forget.

yes, the sonic M will fit the Q5. according to thule's website, almost all (if not all) thule boxes fit the Q5. the question is, whether that sloped back region of the sonic gives the box a little more clearance from the spoiler on the rear hatch than the force does. if the sonic is anything like the force, you'll be able to adjust the position of the "talons" that grip onto the crossbars. but even with the force XL moved as far up as possible, the hatch will still hit the box if it's in the most open position. that being said, you can also set how wide you want the hatch to open by manually positioning the hatch at your preferred max opening and holding the close button at the bottom hatch until the taillights flash a couple times. so for the days i do have the box up top, i limit the travel of the hatch so that it gives me at least an 1 inch before it rubs against the box. of course, what that brings into play is my forehead catching the edge of the hatch if i'm not careful. =)
