Loud Noise from Steering when Cold

So since it's January and living in Nashville it gets pretty cold on some days. Well on really cold days (below 20*F) when simply turning the wheel left or right I'll get a loud knock/bang noise. Could a bolt be loose on the steering column? It goes away once everything warms up.

My steering wheel feels heavy as molasses when I first get into the car at the end of the work day.

I can turn mine practically with my pinky its so light. Just don't like this knocking noise. Sounds like metal to metal contact.

Chipped teeth on power steering rack maybe?

lol this guy. 'Really cold' is -20F or under.

Definitely should get that checked out though. If it has that much trouble and noise when cold there's something wrong. Most-likely guess is the teeth on the steering column gears, but who knows.
