    Upgrade fuel pump on stock system

    Hey guys,

    This might be a silly question and its not something I can find in searches, but can I upgrade the fuel pump without any issues downstream?

    I am in the IT industry and am a firm believer in small "jumps", or versions, of a goal (or piece of software). It allows you to isolate problems easier and less room for error (I always make mistakes when trying to tackle a lot of things at once). As you all know there are many things to do for a stage 3 build and I am trying to do a lot of the prerequisites first. Fuel pump being one of those things. It's the one thing I am weary about doing prior to stage 3... If I am increasing pressure and not decreasing that pressure downstream (since I will not be utilizing the extra flow just yet), will it pose as a problem? Or will the FPR be fine under the increased load?

    Your fuel pressure is not at all dependant on the pump.

    The pump pumps into the fuel system which is a loop that returns to the fuel tank. The FPR is simply a pinch point in the loop, and the fuel injectors are between that pinch point and the pump. Therefore, pressure builds up before the FPR, and bleeds off the excess back to the tank.

    Your pump doesn't care about how much fuel you are or aren't using. It will just pump along, and the FPR will so what it needs to do in order to maintain specified pressure.

    On the other hand, your engine doesn't give a damn how powerful your pump is, because the FPR will still maintain its set pressure.

    I'm running a Bosch 044 on my stock engine S4, my fuel economy actually got better with the overkill pump, and no adverse effects.

    If anyone is wondering why I would do such a thing, I upgrade when things fail or are about to so that I'm ready for stage 3 when the time comes (turbo failure).

    I've got a Bosch 044 (motorsport version), I think the most important thing to check before you replace your fuel pump is replace your fuel filter. This part gets neglected way too often, I'm going to replace mine very soon along with the 044 check valve.

    I plan to go Bosch 044 as well so this is good to know. Note to self: change fuel filter.
