Ceramic Pro - How? Why? When?

If you are looking for permanent protection of your paint, wheels, glass, leather, rubber, suede, and fabrics, here is the solution. Ceramic Pro is a nano-ceramic coating that forms a permanent adhesion to the paints surface. The only way to remove the coating is by polish, no chemical will dissolve it. The coating protects against UV rays, scratches, corrosion, heat, and more.

There is also a hydrophobic property that ceramic pro is known for. This property actually repels water contact and dirt on the surface... The higher the angle, the less dirt/water will attach to the surface.

The process can take anywhere from 2-8 hours depending on the amount of layers being applied.

Here is a video of the process:

I have had mixed results with ceramic pro. Both my s5 and my wife's q5 had ceramic pro (4 layers) applied at the same time by the same detail shop. My car is sepang and my wife's is a darker blue, forget the name now (moonlight? Midnight?). Anyway I'll start off by saying I'm extremely anal and detail oriented in part because of my work but in general I'm just difficult to impress. I understand ceramic pro is hand applied and no one can apply this stuff perfectly over the entire surface of the car. There are areas on my car where I can see high spots. The sepang color is just more sensitive to bringing out surface imperfections. My wife's car on the other hand is almost impossible to detect high spots. I can see them but the dark paint just hides it so well.

After a year her car continues to look and perform as if the cp9 has just been applied. Water continues to bead and swirls are almost non-existent. My car on the other hand looks terrible. The ceramic pro has lost its hydrophobic abilities on certain areas of my body (mostly the flat panels) and there are swirls all over. Actually the swirls aren't terrible but as I said I'm crazy anal and the swirls drive me nuts. My detailer has been awesome and has retouched my car once before because of the high spots. You need the right light to see them but once you know where they are you can't not see them - at least not me.

My detailer agrees there is an issue with the cp9 on my car and is warranteeing their work; I've lost faith in the cp9 so we've agreed to strip my car entirely and will be applying a different ceramic based sealer/protectant. Not sure if we just got a bad batch for my car but I didn't want to risk having to come back a year later if the new cp9 also fails to perform.

I would say the product is amazing when it works but the key is to find a detailer who's familiar with how to work the product and willing to stand behind their work. Everything I've heard about Boden says they are a stand up team so I wouldn't hesitate to bring your car to them. I would only caution anyone who's as anal as I am to accept that this is a human applied product and that high spots are inevitable. The right detailer will stand behind their work and take care of you regardless of how many spots you may find.

In my research before going with cp9 I found that other popular products also suffer from high spots (such as opticoat) but I was willing to try it out since the outfit I took my car to has a great reputation and gets nothing but rave reviews.

This post isn't meant to poo-poo the product but I just wanted to give the community a heads up on reasonable expectations.

Sorry to hear about your experience. Keeping in mind what you said, anything can be done wrong with an improper install.

Happy to hear your detailer is taking care of you.

I just got the car's roof, hood and sides repainted. I am interested in having this process done to the entire exterior of the car. Whats the going rate for a couple of layers of this on my '13 Black S4?

I'm interested in doing my interior. I never knew it could be done until now .

I have a bunch of questions on it that I will have to ask you when I drop by Thursday.

How does this stuff compare to CQuartz or Opti-Coat ?
Danton Black: 2009 Audi C6.5 A6 Sedan (Quattro, 3.0T, Prestige)
    I miss my Avant, longing for a 2011 3.0T

Griselda, aka Grizzy: 2007 Audi C6 A6 Avant (Quattro, S-Line)

Just some small cosmetic mods while getting to Stage 0

CQuartz is claimed to be a higher gloss and just as hard as Opti-Coat. However the Opti-Coat and Ceramic Pro are considered long term coatings which last 5+ years, while CQuartz is considered a short term coating and is known to last up to 3 years.

The biggest choice comes down to the detailer you choose. Hope to hear from you!
