    when to replace brakes

Go ahead and slog me for such a stupid question.

I have a 2011 with about 45k mi. I've been waiting for the break wear light to come on before replacing my breaks. Last time I had it at the dealer for regular service they recommended it be done, but I passed mainly because I would have a local indy shop do the work, and I guess I was just waiting for the light to come on before pulling the trigger.

I haven't noticed any change in braking performance, but don't know that I would (I don't pretend to be a race car driver).

If you haven't noticed a change in braking performance, you're probably fine for now. You may want to get the thickness of the pads inspected or do it yourself. You can always buy a set of brake pads ahead of time, note if the sensor light comes on you would need to buy new sensors as well.

I wouldn't count on the sensor...like anything else electronic, there is always a chance for failure (my wife's sensor broke off and never triggered). If you look behind your wheels and at the brake pad (shine a light at it), you can actually see how much pad is left.

^^ you can visually inspect them very easily... you don't need to be mechanically inclined to see how much pad is left.
I suggest replacing rotors and pads together... if one needs replacing just do them both... might as well.

To add to MrFunk's post above, when replacing, you do not have to go with some super fancy slotted and/or drilled disc. Simple blank disc from a reputable company (Centric, Brembo, etc) will do you fine. Plus they won't cost you an arm and a leg like others.

Yes, I would definitely look at pad thickness, and check for a lip on the rotors. I am hoping to be able to wait until spring but have a full brake refresh sitting in my basement.

Pretty sure the wear sensor is only on one of the pads? So, waiting for that light to come on is not the most accurate way of deciding when to replace brakes.

Yes one of the front pads. I wouldn't count on that going off. Would definitely visually inspect.
