I bought one of these kits used for $80. Ironically my B5 has not yet needed a rear wheel bearing... sort of bought it to help out a fellow B5'er and in anticipation of one of mine someday needing replacement.

If it sounds like you have a knobby tire while driving, and it goes away when you turn a certain direction, its most likely a wheel bearing. That's how it was for me when mine was bad. And checking to see if it's your tire should be fairly easy to eliminate

Eventually it could but it would have to go for a long time first and would sound pretty horrendous.

its really unlikely it will fall off, when you hear it grind metal on metal you should really change it otherwise it should be fine for a while, I have been driving with bad wheel bearing for about three weeks now and don't plan on changing it until i hear metal on metal grind.

not really, you can tell by sound when you need to change it, when you wiggle it and it moves it might be due to a bad tie rod or bad ball joint
side to side movement = tie rod
up and down movement = ball joint (use a pry bar under the tire when car is jacked up )

    sound is best indicator
